The best recorder for the price.
This is our second one of the DAR-101. The first was purchase in April of 2013. My wife is a musician and uses this recorder for her compositions almost daily. Almost daily means exactly that. The original still works but the response to the thumbwheel is a bit sluggish. Rather than open it up and clean it we decided to just buy another one in case Sangean decides to discontinue this model. We can still use the old one for other recordings or just as a playback machine. We have about ten Sangean radios of different types that we’ve purchased over the years and they all perform flawlessly and the sound from them is the best you’ll find. This recorder is no different in sound quality, easy to use, and durable. You can’t go wrong with this.

Why this digital recorder is far better than others for recording telephone calls
First, let me put to rest the argument whether or not a person can legally record telephone calls. In my state I can and I do. Check your laws before you start recording calls. Now, why this recorder is best suited for this application. To start with, I have tried several of the small, or should I say micro-recording devices. All have tiny screens that are impossible to read, all require an AAA battery that goes dead and erases all your settings and all are subject to electrical impulses which change the date and time so that the file stamping is worthless. Some have micro SD card capabilities, but most can only handle a few hours of recording with internal memory.Along comes the Sangean DAR-101, which eliminates all of the above problems and their lack of functionality. The DAR-101 is a full-feature digital recording device, but for recording telephone calls, it is so much better than anything else you will be amazed. Not only can you read the menu/playback screen clearly, the menu is simplified so that you can make changes without dragging out the user manual every time. The files are stored on a SD memory card (I use a 32Gb) so you can record in excess of 1,000 hours of calls before you have to download them to your computer or other archiving media. The device controls are large enough that you can easily manipulate them and not have to use your fingernail to make sure you don’t hit two buttons at the same time like on the micro recorders. And, if you are either concerned (read: paranoid) or actually have a law requiring a beep every 30-60 seconds to alert the other party that they are being recorded, the DAR-101 can be set to do just that. So, to enumerate these incredibly useful features:1. Convenient size and easy to use controls2. Simple, yet comprehensive and intuitive menu3. Plenty of hours of recording and time/date stamping for convenient retrieval4. Background beep to alert others they are being recorded (only if you decide to turn it on)5. Quality MP3 file creation in 64, 128 or 192kbps recording speed6. Super easy connection to the telephone lineAs far as other types of digital recording you might choose to do and the features needed, they are all there. However, my review was designed to be specifically aimed at those who have tried so many other “phone” recorders in the past and have been disappointed. This is the only one for you. You will not be sorry if you purchase the DAR-101 for your business needs. It is built to last and built to be user friendly. The price is as low as you will pay for any of the others and yet the quality is so much greater. This is one piece of electronic equipment that will stand the test of time and prevail.

Sangean DAR-101 Excellent Recorder and Sound
I have been looking for a smaller portable recorder to use for my podcasts to be more mobile and flexible. This unit is great as it has a retro 70’s vibe to the look of it. Its not very large and pretty lightweight. It does have microphone inputs for DYNAMIC microphones, no 3.5mm condenser microphones. It has built in mics, but I have not used those yet. I was hoping to be able to plug the condenser mics in, but alas I was not able. I plug those into my soundcard/soundboard and then run a LINE-IN into this recorder deck, works and sounds great. Very easy to use out of the box. I tried 32GB SD card and it worked ok, I also tried to use a higher capacity of 64GB and it would not even register its existence, so 32GB might be it folks. Still it records only in mp3 (highest quality being 192kbps). The only drawback here is I wish it allowed you to record 320kbps and even more, I wish it had WAV recording options. I was hoping when I read that it records phone calls that I could use the deck for my podcast as a call-in and record option, but oddly enough it only records old school landline phones Weird for sure. So, that is pretty useless for me, I wish there was a cell phone input to record, that would be a great upgrade if they make a new version. Sound is very good as you control the levels, treble and bass. Overall a sturdy well made recorder, I recommend it highly if you are looking for something a bit easier to use than a small voice recorder or elaborate setup recorder.PROS: Ease of use. Sound quality, SD card option. Rechargeable Battery option (3xAAA) I guess you can use rechargeable’s and it will charge them up!? Also comes with a AC adapter.CONS: No 3.5mm condenser mic inputs (2 would be ideal, 3 even better). Phone landline recording but not cell phones. NO WAV recording ability, only mp3.I am thinking of picking another up to keep in storage in case this one stops being made, as I like the overall product and can see this lasting a long long time.

So far this device is suiting my application perfectly. It uses good isolated power so that it does not cause a buzz on the phone line as some units do. In the automatic mode the recording is delayed for a few seconds ( some say 6 seconds) but that is not an issue for me. It has the option to select the periodic beep to notify callers they are being recorded but I do not use it. I installed the batteries, connected the AC power adapter up, installed a SDCard and set some options now the unit just works automatically when I pick up the phone. It shows me how much recording time I have left and has a bar graph to show me the volume level is OK during recording. A great improvement over my old cassette system! I use this on a standard land line system.

the unit looks very tidy and neat, well it did until it was plugged in, don,t worry the fire was soon extinguished and the ringing in my ears eased in time . regards vinny fox
