Today, Europe s fastest growing Jewish population is in Berlin. Germany is considered one of the most democratic societies in the world, assuming the position of moral leader of Europe as they embrace hundreds of thousands of refugees. This development couldn t have been imagined in 1945. Through personal stories Germans & Jews explores Germany s transformation as a society, from silence about the Holocaust to facing it head on. Unexpectedly, a nuanced story of reconciliation emerges. What began as a private conversation between the two filmmakers and friends, Tal Recanati (Jewish) and Janina Quint (non-Jewish German), grew into a cultural exchange among many and we realize that the two people are inextricably linked through the memory of the Holocaust. Germans & Jews is at once uncomfortable and provocative, unexpected and enlightening.

What a great feel good story and just maybe, a template for the United States
I watch a lot of documentaries on WW2 and the Holocaust. I have always found the story of Germany and the Nazis fascinating in a terrible way. It’s the old question question of how a very well educated and civilized country committed the most monstrous act in history? How did it happen and how can it be prevented from happening again? We may never find the answer to the first question, but this documentary at least provides some answers on how it might be prevented from happening again.Watching and reading about the Holocaust is incredibly depressing and this documentary at least shows that at least that there was some bit of a happy ending to the whole horrible story. As painful and slow as it was, that the Germans were able to make the changes in their society necessary for Jews to feel safe there, I found fascinating and moving.I can’t believe that this story of Jews in some numbers returning to Germany at the start of the 21st century is not better known. As an I watched I couldn’t help feeling how wonderful it would be if us Americans could take the same approach to our long and bitter history of racism. It would be so good if we could just honestly admit and examine how we have systematically oppressed and excluded non white people in this country. It is an issue that still divides and twists American society today. If only we could lay the wrongs that we have committed out in the open and to try to rectify them as the Germans have done. How much could that help heal our still dangerously divided country?

    Enjoyable and enlightening
I had long heard about how Germany has dealt/is dealing with the Holocaust and how children are taught about it. I also noticed a welcoming of outsiders dating at least as under Merkel. So this film intrigued me. I found it enlightening to hear Jews and non-Jewish Germans talking about their experiences in that country.

the potential for historical evolution… both positive, aber auch manchmal negative.
This was a truly finely crafted piece of work/art. I am a 60 year old American who studied and lived in Germany in the mid 1980’s. I went to the Anne Frank house with my german girlfriend, who whispered to me during the tour she felt uncomfortable (there) in her german skin.

    complexity
It presents Jewish life and its complexity well. Yes, Germans have that guilt and Jews struggle with their own rationalization. Some exceptions- Israeli musicians living in Berlin are just caricatures of that pathetic, cosmopolitan, rootless image ” Germany is much much safer than Israel” Whatever you smoke, man!The next generation’s Jewish pride in being German will end when they will grow up and are reminded that one can not become a German the way you can become an American.

    Germany Today
Fascinating and informative. The National Socialists were evil and it stained Germany for generations but it is time to lift the burden of guilt from the generations now living in Germany. Many Jewish people have moved on as well. Never forget for sure but now move on. One of the best films I have seen on Amazon Prime. I am not Jewish but my wife is and she lost much of her mother’s family in Auschwitz, I also worked at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. All people should watch this documentary.

Guilt, healing, and the guilt of the healing.
A wonderful opportunity to hear intelligent and heartfelt discussion from both perspectives of the decedents of the holocaust — about the complicated dynamics of guilt, healing, and even the guilt of healing between Germany and Jews. If you watch a lot of WW2 documentaries, this show may for the first time give you some glimmer of hope for humankind — that out of the ashes of the atrocities of our not too distant past, humankind also has a deep capacity for healing and growth anew.

    Valuable
I’m glad I watched this program. I’m glad that Germany has progressed towards the ideals of equality for all human beings. I’m especially glad that some people spoke out about the pitfalls of glorifying any one group. For Germans grappling with a horrendous past, it’s comforting to know that people are asking the hard questions and not shying away from the answers. I hope it continues.

should be called Jews views of Germans
A bit one sided, documentary’s about how evil Germans where are not hard to find but what requires a bit of searching to find the fact based answers to much less a documentary is why did the Germans do what they did what caused it what led up to it a entire population of a country didnt just wake up one day and start hating the innocent Jews that were just minding their own business but that is how history is being taught.Don’t get me wrong the holocausts was a terrible thing but without ever knowing what caused it you can never understand why it happened in the first place and that is the one thing you must have in order to forgive someone is to be able to understand why, it is also important to ensure history doesn’t repeat itself
