On July 2, 1947, a spacecraft of unknown origin crashed in the New Mexico desert outside Roswell Army Air Base. Four bodies – known as the Grays – were recovered. From that moment on, everything you think to be true about American history has been influenced by that event. On February 17, 1962, another event occurred, related to the first, but one that has, until now, been kept completely suppressed. You are being trusted with that secret. In 1996, television audiences were introduced to John Loengard (Eric Close) and Kimberly Sayers (Megan Ward), two heroic freedom fighters charged with the unearthly task of protecting humanity against an alien infestation known as the Hive while showing us- through their own experiences and actions – the truth behind our own recent past. Call it alternative history or call it the unthinkable truth. Either way, call it Dark Skies.

Finally, this epic series has been released.
Like many others that have reviewed this item, I have been waiting a long time for this to be released on DVD. Now, it’s finally here!Dark Skies was a series that only lasted one season about government cover-ups of various incidences related to the UFO/alien phenomenon. It aired on Saturdays at 8 PM on NBC, which was generally a time-slot for family-friendly programs and did not help Dark Skies’ chances of staying on the air. Not only that, but it was endlessly (and unfairly) compared to The X-Files, which was very popular at the time.Admittedly, while the two series had some things in common, they were really much more different than they were alike. While The X-Files had an overall alien conspiracy story-arc, it was also a show that dealt with ghosts, monsters, time travel, the occult, government conspiracies NOT related to aliens, etc. Dark Skies never focused on those things. It was also a 9 year journey of Agents Mulder and Scully searching for “the truth.”With Dark Skies, the series started out with both the main characters as well as the audience knowing EXACTLY what “the truth” was from the very beginning. Aliens were here, they were hostile, and powerful people didn’t want us to know. It was a story that started in the 1960s and was initially planned to bring us up to the present, going through all sorts of well-known historical events (like the JFK assassination) and tying each and every one of them to a government conspiracy to keep the truth about alien visitations on this planet a secret. It was very much a different show than The X-Files, and anyone who wrote off the show as just a cheap imitation should give it a second chance now that it is readily available on DVD at quite an affordable price. It is true to UFO/alien lore, and presents it all in a respectably well-done format of fiction. It comes in a great collector’s case presented like a TOP SECRET package declassified for the first time. It even includes a booklet written by Bryce Zabel, co-creator of Dark Skies, made up to look like the information presented in the series is fact but presented as a work of fiction in order to avoid government intervention. Very cool for the fans!As others have pointed out, there are no subtitles on this release. While unfortunate, it should not stop people from buying this. It includes tons of great bonus features, including an all-new 3-part documentary on the making of the series which includes interviews with Eric Close and Megan Ward, the two main stars of the series, as well as the international version of the pilot episode! They really pulled out all the stops to make this a great release for the fans who have been waiting so long for it, so I highly recommend it!

Maybe we all need to go back and watch Dark Skies from a different perspective.
This show, originally shown on TV twenty years ago in 1996 told in 20 hours, was a very interesting and enjoyable series. Included was an enlightening pamphlet introduction written by Bryce Zabel, from which I would like to quote the following:âFirst, we gave every network executive an ultra-classified âBriefing Bookâ- a black notebook with a gold seal which stated that by breaking the seal, the reader was accepting the âpenalty of treasonâ if they were to reveal its contents. It was wrapped in plain brown wrapping paper and tied with twine. It was stamped âAbove Top Secretâ.ââFortunately for us, they opened these foreboding notebooks anyway. Inside they found our Timeline, supporting documents and a letter written to Brent Friedman and myself from a man named âJohn Loengardâ. His short note told us we had to tell the truth, but that to protect innocent people, we had to do it under the cover of fiction.ââThatâs right. We pitched Dark Skies as the ultimate disclosure project- disguised as a Saturday night suspense thriller TV series- which would prepare the world for the truth about UFOâs. This led to numerous questions over the years. How much of Dark Skies is true? Was there really a John Loengard who worked for Majestic 12 and served as our whistleblower source? Where was the line between fact and make believe?ââWhen the series aired, some people gave us credit for bravely revealing the truth at a crucial time in world history, while others speculated we were simply tools of a government disinformation project. It got so crazy that we were asked to write a memo to the company legal team explaining what was real and what was not.ââSo, for the record, this is the way it is: This is all a work of fiction. We made it up. Anything that sounds true but cannot be found in public record somewhere, well, just consider that another figment in our already overtaxed imagination. It is only fitting. We had to tell the story as just another big lie in the Ultimate Big Lie.âââ¦I am not as comfortable with the ambiguity of the Loengard story, and the shadow world between fact and fiction, as I was in the mid 1990âs. But, promises were made about discretion during those days, and those promises will be kept.âProject Camelot LA Awake and Aware Conference 19 September 2009(from the interview transcript)Bob Dean once talked about Chris Carter ( from the X-Files), and is quoted as saying:I pulled him over and I say- Chris, you got to level with me. But, I say, I want to ask you something. There are three incidents, three episodes of your X-Files that I happen to know are highly classified government secrets.Iâve been on the inside, I knew these things to be classified and here they are. Iâm seeing them on the X-Files, for Godâs sake. And I say: How the hell do you guys do that?He says: Oh, Iâve got some great writers. And I said: Bulls***. Nonsense. Poppycock, you know. What is it my good old British ancestors…? Balderdash. [laughter]I said: You canât tell me that your writers have come up with classified material that theyâve dramatized that are right on and are still classified. He looked around and he got a sheepish grin on his face and he says: Well, yeah, weâve been getting some story ideas from a variety of sources.I say: Where? He says: Well, you know, I canât really say, but weâve been getting some promotional ideas from different people.I said: Well, youâre right on, and I laid them out for him, these three particular cases that were classified and still are classified. And all he did, he looked at me sheepishly and he grinned and he says: You ainât seen nothing yet. Stay tuned. And it ran for another two years. But there, again, is what I wanted to point out to you is what Spielberg was involved in, what Chris Carter is involved in, and what some of the directors and writers of the Stargate series and the Star Trek series…In, from time to time, little bits and pieces of material are injected into those story lines that are not fiction. Theyâre not science fiction, theyâre science fact. But, theyâre introduced in such a way that you donât know it â you donât recognize it. It hits you at whatâs known as the subliminal level.Maybe we all need to go back and watch Dark Skies from a different perspective.

If you are planning to buy Dark Skies on DVD then this is the better package. OK, for the UK you will need a region-free player and an NTSC capable TV, but this box set scores over Medium Rare’s Region 2 version in three important aspects – more content, better technical quality and much better extras. You’ll see a review from me for the Medium Rare (MR) PAL version, which I bought first. In that I commented that the pilot episode differs from that shown on UK’s Channel 4 television back in the nineties. Well, in this package, BOTH versions of the pilot are included, with The Awakening (with re-shot scenes for the USA transmission)) in its rightful place as the first episode on DVD1. The early pilot version of The Awakening is on DVD 6 and there are detailed explanations from the producer/writers Bryce Zabel and Bruce Friedman as to why all the re-shoots had to take place. The picture quality of this NTSC version is much better. The MR is presumably a conversion from NTSC video to PAL and is noticeably less crisp. There is some excellent acting in this series, and the fine detail of facial expression needs the best definition available. On a practical note, the actual packaging of these six DVDs is better (three slimline duals in a card case) rather than MR’s clumsy 5-DVD plastic box with its poor retainers that allow the end disks to slip out. With the 19 episodes spread over DVDs 1 to 5, the whole of DVD6 is used for extras. There’s the early pilot (called here the ‘International Pilot’), a fascinating interview feature with the producers and stars Eric Close and Megan Ward, a tongue -in-cheek Glossary, the original sales presentation, some network promos and the proposal for series 2 (which, alas, was never made). Oh, and you can play The Awakening on DVD1 with a commentary from the producers and the stars (great fun).Read the reviews for the MR PAL version to make a judgement about the stories and the acting but (as long as you have the right playing equipment) buy this version.
