This is the second in a series of three volumes dedicated to digital synthesis and sound design. It is part of a teaching method incorporating a substantial amount of online supporting materials: hundreds of sound examples and interactive examples, programs written in Max, as well as a library of Max objects created especially for this book. Structured for use in university courses, the book is an overview of the theory and practice of Max, with a glossary of terms and suggested tests that allow students to evaluate their progress. This book will provide a reader with skill and understanding in using Max for sound design and musical composition.

A must have text.
I am an Arts Technology student. In some of my classes, the subject matter is about sound design using Max6 (Max/MSP). The tutorials that come with the software are close to being useless in actually understanding the software. When I found the first volume of Cipriani and Giri’s book I purchased it in the hope of alleviating my confusion. It accomplished that and a whole lot more. I like the dual chapter format (theory/practice) which provides detailed instruction on what the chapter is about while coinciding with the how to. After having read volume 1 twice and implementing what I learned, I realized that I desperately wanted the next volume. I was very pleased that it was finally released and I bought it four days later. I am now half way through this volume and can hardly wait for the third volume. I highly recommend these books for anyone interested in learning about sound synthesis; especially those who are new to Max6.

Didactic and Inspiring
I’m studying audio engineering at ITESM and Max is one of the programming languages that is used throughout the entire career. These two volumes are the absolute best resources I’ve found to learn not only this programming language but also found it to be a great resource for sound design. The examples in the book are explained with so much detail that sometimes I don’t even use the externals that come with the books.I’m really looking forward to the third volume.

Would just like to add to the all the positive reviews
Would just like to add to the all the positive reviews. This book has taught me more than multiple classes and tutorials put together. If you want to learn Max/MSP, just get this as well as the first volume. It’s everything you need to basically get the tools to do whatever you want

Buy this book
This series is probably the best resource of Max/MSP that you can buy.I haven’t finished this one yet, but I already love it. I’ve learned more with Vol.1 (and a few hours into Vol.2) than a semester in college.I’ll buy Vol.3 blindfolded, whenever it comes out.

No examples
Would have been nice if you could find the examples to download. I feel ripped off. It just seems useless with out them since they have these objects that start with vs., what ever that is.

I really love every page of this book which I’m reading now. The contents are explained in deep detail which I can easily understand, learn and then use what I’ve learned in practice. It’s not just about Max MSP, as it explains very different topics in signal processing and simultaneously stimulates the reader’s creativity.

As a sound designer & electronic musician, I am always seeking novel ways to create or mangle sounds. This book is an invaluable tool for any serious sound addict wanting to further both their general knowledge of the subject and MSP skills.D.Nolan
