For many years, boys and girls have read “This Country of Ours” and its stories of the Americans. Now for a new generation of curious and wondering readers, something more is provided with this version.
This is the story of people brought together not because they are of the same race or ethnicity or background or even with a common journey here, but because they share belief in a core of ideas. Some of those ideas had to be forged in a fire before they were available to all, but they were American ideas still, and they were worthy of the struggle and worthy of the fight, to provide and protect that freedom for every American.
“This Country of Ours: The Story of the United States, Volume 1” is the history of America from the time of the Vikings’ exploration in the year 1000 up until the 1630s in New England. Donna-Jean A. Breckenridge has annotated, expanded, and updated H. E. Marshall’s beloved history book for today’s audience. Accurate tribal names, sources of quotes, pronunciation guides, and added and updated information tether this story to the historical record while maintaining the literary excellence of the original.

Excellent!
This book is so well written, easy to read aloud, engaging, and the footnotes and extra information at the end of chapters is fantastic. This has really brought history to life for us. Just bought volume 2. My kids and I have absolutely loved this. Thank you for updating this book for us all to enjoy!

Well Done!
Our favorite book from our history studies this year. As a homeschooling mom, I thoroughly enjoyed the footnotes and pronunciation guides at the end of each chapter. Such a delight to read aloud!

This courty book
This is a great look at early American history. It has some great specifics at the end of each chapter and is a wonderful story history book. I do Charlotte Mason home education and this was a great addition this year.

Not the full original work BUTâ¦.
This is only part of the original work which will be fleshed out into three different volumes, but it is so worth the extra expense. I own the original but Iâm planning to purchase all these editions as they are published. This edition is so much easier to read aloud with the proper punctuation. I also greatly appreciated the notes at the end of the chapter along with the pronunciation guide. Comparing chapter one from both books, derogatory and offensive words or phrases were removed. Rather than saying the generic Indians and natives, or the offensive salvages, we are given the tribal name! At the end of the chapter there are notes giving us a little more info on this tribe. We are also given source information and website for further research.Iâve been told that people with reading challenges struggle with certain fonts and spacing. I think the new book will help with that.

Engaging Stories
My son is reading this at school but Iâve enjoyed reading it myself. Iâve learned stories of explorers I only vaguely remember from childhood. The additions of the recent author are helpful while maintaining the original authorâs voice and purpose. Well done!

Wonderful work
I had another copy of this book (full version) and have just hated the formatting, and readings were bogged down with so many errors. This version is just wonderful, lovely in the hands, great formatting and I love the additional notes and pronunciation guides. I have two students currently using this book for history, but the older is beyond what is contained in this Volume 1, so has to use our old version. I cannot wait for more!

Derogatory and offensive words gone
This is a great update. Easier to read and nice that I donât have to screen and change the offensive words as I go. Also like the notes at the end of each chapter. This isnât the whole book, as the rest is in the works, just be aware.
