“The perfect binge listen.”—Yahoo Lifestyle
Instant #1 New York Times bestseller.
The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband—and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive.
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.
Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.
Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him….

Chilling, Provocative and Surprising
It is difficult to review this book without inadvertently revealing too much. I can usually see a startling plot twist or a surprising character disclosure on the far horizon, but the stunner plot twist genuinely shocked me. It was original and inventive, but disturbing. The reader embarks on a journey with the book. A psychological thriller that is equal parts detective story. It begin with an earnest forensic psychotherapist, who is hired to treat a mute patient at a facility, who hasnât spoken since she shot and killed her husband several years ago. Theo is determined to be the one to reach Alicia, who was once a famous painter. He theorizes that if he can renew her desire to paint, perhaps he can break her silence and heal the trauma thatâs impeding her voice. This is the crux of the tale. Why did Alicia murder her spouse and why wonât she speak? The reader is lulled into believing that the story will lead down a particular path, and then, suddenly, the narrative becomes something else entirely. I was disappointed that Iâd been fooled by the misdirection, but this was cleverly done by Michaelides. Several red herrings were introduced by the author, making many characters into potential culprits, capable of misdeeds. I enjoyed the psychological aspects of the book, and found the discussions regarding early childhood development and trauma exposure to be compelling. This is a dark and atmospheric tale, in which art and weather figure prominently. Actions and motivations are as mercurial as the humid heat, the respite of falling snow or an angry, careless brushstroke. The book concludes abruptly, and is left open-ended, which is decidedly frustrating, given the powerful reveal that was the point of the entire endeavor. Michaelides mentions his wish to revisit Theoâs character again in the future, so perhaps more will be forthcoming. The story is already provocative. The ambiguous, unfinished ending just invites more intrigue, speculation and individual interpretation. This is a chilling mystery and a worthy debut.

A page turner from start to finish
Highly recommend. It kept me guessing until the very end. The story is full of surprises, and the ending delivers a big twist that ties everything together. It’s an engaging read that’s perfect for anyone who enjoys a good mystery with lots of unexpected turns.

Such an easy read – couldn’t put it down!
Review Time –
boring
This one was painful. The writing itself is fine, but the bulk of the book is deeply boring at the best of times and weirdly stigmatizing of cluster B disorders at the worst. The twist is interesting leading to a brief period in the last 10% of the book in which you think for a moment perhaps the book was good after all and not a complete waste of your time. Unfortunately that doesn’t last. The story quickly reverts to boring, but now with a sense of rushing to the finish about it. 3 stars because while I didn’t really enjoy it the writing itself is pretty good and I think if it had been given a few more revisions and rewrites it could have shined.

Silent Patient
Good book overall, it felt really slow in the beginning. I also hate when male figures act like babies in books (not literally) and try to blame other things or people for their actions. Gets really good and has some mind blowing twists. Worth the time for sure, you will be guessing until the end.

A very good book, shocking ending!
I don’t think I have read a book like this where the plot twists and twists and twists and then twists again. The characters were well defined; the book hard to put down. I was so shocked at the end that I had to sit and recover. A mystery to end all mysteries!

What a twist!
I didn’t realize I could be so shocked by a book! I had been wanting to read this since it was published, and I have to say it did not disappoint. I am eager to read Alex’s other stuff, but I’m almost afraid to – I think he’s outdone himself. If you like twisty on the edge of your seat thrillers, this is a book you must read. Start early in the day because you will not want to put it down!

Brilhante, inteligente e sagaz. Me deixo presa do inÃcio ao fim. Mas nossa, o fim…que absurdo de bom. Melhor thriller dos últimos tempos. Recomendaria pra todos que gostam do gênero.

Loved reading the book. The book is well written and the attempts to paint the entire set of events is well done. It keeps you on the hook and is gripping from the beginning till the end. I am waiting for a nice movie to be made out of this nice psycho thriller.
