A story not to miss
This is one of the best stories of WW11 I’ve read. My goodness, the characters have felt like friends. I truly wish younger people of today would read about the horrors of that war. My generation is coming to an end in the near future. Books like this will keep history alive. Not many people think of Vienna when discussing the war…This book brings that sad story to light…Excellent read!

What an enjoyable read
This book is well written with a very basic story. The narrative took a bit to get moving, and I would have told some parts in flashbacks. The book came to an enjoyable full circle ending.

Fictional history at its best
A marvelous WW II story of hope perseverance, and family. When Sophie and Hanna escape from the Austrian Nazis , Hanna finds a new life in America. And Sophie finds a job she is uniquely qualified for with the Royal family in England. It is a marvelous story told with action during the war and in present day. It artfully flows between the time periods. As a history buff I love the details of the war period and I found Sophie to be a determined and amazing woman. It’s a wonderful tale and I highly recommend it to those who enjoy historical fiction.

Historical AND moving emotional story.
As a child of an Italian war bride and a US soldier, this story rings true from the historical perspective. I could identify with all of the main characters and the overall setting. My mother endured so much as a young woman growing up in occupied Italy where the world was turned upside down, and this story begins with similar horror. However it ends with similar joy because my mother came to America and had a wonderful life. I appreciate the hard work and diligence in research as well as the masterful writing.Thank you for this wonderful story.

Well Written!
This is the first work I have read by this author. It was well written! A very interesting story. And, unlike so many novels these days, it did not have lots of bad language, nor graphic violence and sex! Refreshing! Will definitely check out her other novels.

Great characters. Wonderful plot. History told in a very real and interesting way, even though it is a fiction piece. Very vivid without a lot of extra words. Quick read.

What a beautifully written book. So resonant with my own history as my family too were from Vienna (my grandfather). Very emotional and so factual. Thoroughly well researched, turning into a lovely story. Thank you to my sister for recommending it to me.

It is alway a bit like venturing into the unknown when meeting an author for the first time. I really liked this book. It is well written and at times it left me wondering how much truth there really is in the story.

I read a lot of WW11 fiction and this was a different approach.Based on a real person, it was almost impossible to believe that she could end up as a royal librarian considering how she got there. It’s well written and a very good story.

The story moves from pre war Austria to modern Windsor with an interesting plot, moving between the two worlds where the links unfold throughout. I like the authors writing style and the authenticity of the settings. Recommend as a good read
