An Amazon Charts bestseller
From New York Times bestselling author Alice Hoffman comes a heartfelt short story about family, independence, and finding your place in the world.
Isabel Gibson has all but perfected the art of forgetting. She’s a New Yorker now, with nothing left to tie her to Brinkley’s Island, Maine. Her parents are gone, the family bookstore is all but bankrupt, and her sister, Sophie, will probably never speak to her again.
But when a mysterious letter arrives in her mailbox, Isabel feels herself drawn to the past. After years of fighting for her independence, she dreads the thought of going back to the island. What she finds there may forever alter her path—and change everything she thought she knew about her family, her home, and herself.

Nice for a Short Story
This was cute. I’m not much of a short story fan, but this fits the moment. I needed something to read after the last book left me an hour from sleep time. It is fun to finish a book in an hour or so.I had this one tucked away in my Audible library. Jennifer Jill Araya, the narrator, was able to keep the characters fresh and sincere. There are a couple more novellas following this one. I plan to get them and finish the story.

Such a sweet short Book. The only complaint I have was how the ending seemed very rushed. I would have loved to see the sisters relationship heal and grow in the weeks they spent together. Overall I enjoyed it and can’t wait to read the next book!

Short and Beautiful
Very rarely do I not want a book to end.Hoffman’s words are simple, but enthralling. She draws you into the lives of her characters and makes you wish for more!

Wow
Very interesting short novella about two sisters who are estranged. When Isabel gets a letter from her sister asking for help, she drops everything and leaves NY to come back home to Maine. But it was her 11 year old niece who wrote the letter, hoping that her Aunt would come.

open and remember
Loved it, poignant, right on, grief is deep and reactive or…… got smiles from me, contemplation and forgiveness and it only took 36 pages

Short and sweet
Classic Alice Hoffman. She never fails to get it right. Her grasp for familial relationships is unmatched in her generation. Please, read this gem.

Alice Hoffman conveys the feeling of homecoming in just 36 pages. This lovely short story is not only moving but also entertaining. It’s a great read.

I always like a story about books and book stores. This one is about sisters who parted after their parents died. Sophie stayed and kept her father’s book store open and Isabel left to forget her pain in New York City. But when Sophie’s daughter, Violet, asked her to come and help, Isabel went back and found not only her sister, but herself that she had forgotten.Short stories are wonderful and frustrating at the same time. They don’t waste time getting to the heart of the matter but they are over so quickly just when you feel like you are getting to know the people and place. This is a good story and I’m glad I read it. Thank you to Amazon for the ARC; the opinions are my own.

I didn’t realise this was a short read. I has envisaged all the characters and it was just getting good when it finished abruptly. Hoping there’s a follow up.

I enjoyed this book very much. Beautifully narrated, the author successfully managed to create well-rounded characters in a 36 page story that will keep you turning pages. Before you know it, you’ve completed it. Despite the shortness of the story, I did not find it lacking in emotions or imagery.
