You are a podcaster. And if you were a beast on a David Attenborough nature documentary, that would be your plaintive cry.

This is not a book about how to make a podcast. You know how to do that, and anyway, the tech in podcasting changes all the time. This book will be useful to you for the rest of your career, because it will show you how to make your podcast better.

The Audience is Listening is a book of tough love that presents you with a repeatable process to earn and keep an audience.

You’ve been told that you need to be passionate about your topic. That’s true, of course. But it won’t guarantee you an audience. No one deserves an audience, but you can earn one—a body of humans who look forward to your show, week after week, and make it a regular part of their lives.

Ultimately, every podcaster is producing an entertainment, a diversion in a universe full of diversions. In such a universe, the listener is in complete control. You only need to spend some time with them, learning from them, and their secrets become a little less mysterious. It is this arcane knowledge that can turn your podcast into a show, a thing people care about enough to tell somebody else about.

It’s that last bit that really matters. In The Audience is Listening, Tom Webster will show you how to do it.

If you have a Podcast read this book. If not, read this book!
For anyone who is trying to understand their audience and who they are trying to reach – from online to in person – the lessons author Tom Webster shares are practical and relatable. He offers keen insights to the Podcasting industry and also pulls back to larger perspectives of marketing and segmentation analysis. Webster shares part of his personal journey of helping media companies excel and provides analogies along the way to other industries such as restaurants. The latter makes his insights feel familiar and helps unfold how building an audience matters.Everyone who has a product to sell needs to consider who their customers are and perhaps focus less on your personal passion for your great idea. Great ideas are wonderful. Great ideas with an audience are priceless.

The audience is listening – hope the creator audience listens as well
Been a fan of Tom Webster for a long time. His insight and integrity towards the true numbers of the Podcasting game has been, sadly, a bit of an anomaly inside our industry. The integrity and reality of his experience puts him a place where Podcasters should be listening. And through it all, he keeps a much needed sense of humor. This book starts with a premise that, sadly, bothers many. Tom says that we don’t DESERVE our audience, we need to earn it. It can be earned, he’s shown how many have before us, but we need to earn it. Apparently we aren’t as endless fascinating as we thought we were. And the book tells how (and in great detail). It’s not that “I feel like” or “it should be that” or “one day we will” nonsense that we get from so much similar content in this space. The third rail topics of YouTube, “findability,” editing, when NOT to listen to the audience, … it’s all there. And some worksheets.Want a better Podcast? I recommend this book.Want a well written book to remind you / encourage you as to where we can go in this space? I recommend this book.Want a Podcast related chuckle or two? A Chris Gaines joke? I recommend this bookAt the very least, consider asking your Podcast audience Tom’s “Five Great Questions.”

Great guide for taking your podcast(s) to the next level
This book is a great guide on leveling up your podcast. It contains a lot of practical knowledge that is less about money and more about effort. I would recommend this to anyone that has a podcast or is planning on starting one, that wants to make it more than just a hobby.

EXCEPTIONAL! I bought three copies for clients.
I devoured this book in record time. These insights are so killer and come from a man who’s spent decades doing the hard research. Here’s just one I’ll be using immediately. Ask listeners: “If this show were to die tomorrow–never to be produced again—what one thing, if any would you miss?” This frame is key because “People are more articulate in describing loss than gain.”The book is jammed full of these gems. The stories and jokes are fun too.

The Audience is Listening should be required reading for every single podcaster. In fact, anytime you hear someone say, “I should start a podcast,” give them this book. And if you already have a podcast, read it once or twice a year. Your audience will thank you. The Audience is Listening is to podcasters what the The Elements of Style is to writers.
