We are at a critical point in human history. Humanity is under threat, but all is not lost. We can take action! But how?
Sustainable IT Playbook for Technology Leaders will show you how. It will walk you through the construction and implementation of a sustainable IT strategy and enable you to do your bit for the future of mankind.
The book is split into three parts. Part I details the “why” and the clear and present danger that humanity faces today: the climate crisis. How did we get here, what are the immediate threats, what are the planetary boundaries that we need to peel back to safe levels, and what impact does IT have on society at large? Part II will focus on the “what.” It examines the nitty-gritty details of what we can do to unlock significant returns on sustainable investments toward a more sustainable future. Part III, the final part of the book, focuses on the “how.” How do you turn your ideas into action? What do you need to do to establish your baseline and your direction of travel towards your objective? This part provides tangible case studies and explains how you can start your journey today to begin delivering global and impactful objectives.
By the end of this book, you’ll be able to plan, implement, and communicate a sustainable IT strategy and set yourself apart as a progressive technology leader.

The right book at the right time.
For CIOs looking to help lead their business’s sustainability efforts, or just looking to assess and reduce IT’s carbon impact, this is the right book at the right time. The author, Niklas Sundberg, is CIO of Assa Abloy, and he and his team have helped make the company a beacon of sustainability. In Sustainable IT Playbook for Technology Leaders, he describes how it was done, and details the steps that any CIO can take to start on or accelerate their sustainability journey for the IT function and the enterprise. I found the book insightful, comprehensive and, thankfully, practical-oriented. Priority focal points, actions, impacts and benefits to the business are well articulated, and the “getting started” recommendations are much appreciated. The book also is packed full of references to supporting materials for those who want to investigate further. In my print copy, some of the graphics were printed too lightly to be easily legible. I recommend this for every technology leader.

A Comprehensive, Actionable Guide for All Tech Leaders
The Sustainable IT Playbook for Technology Leaders acts as an aggregator of all things at the intersection of sustainability and IT. In a time where information on this topic is just as wide as it is deep, this aggregator plays a vital role in accelerating sustainable IT transformation. The context provided at the beginning of the book is robust and timely; the categories of guidance are sensibly organized and achieve significant depth; and the framework for assessing your sustainable IT maturity is extremely useful. This book is great for folks who are just getting familiar with the topic OR for those well on their way.I personally can’t wait to see the role that this foundational text plays in transforming our industry! Bravo!

Great content – terrible print quality
Great content but there’s an issue with the print – all the graphics and tables are washed out grey which makes it impossible to read ……..

Tremendous resource for Board-level Sustainablility for Tech Discussions
I’d been hearing the headscratching conversations happening for several years now among IT leaders:- “We know we need to start thinking about sustainable IT as a means to execute and effectively measure our Carbon neutrality goals. Our Board is starting to ask about it.”- “Our CEO has committed to achieving sustainability by 2030 but I have no idea what it means for IT as one of the largest functional consumers of energy in our company.”- “I want to do my part to leave the planet in a better place, but what do I do and where do I start?”With this book, Author Niklas Sundberg has given an amazing tool to his peers and the IT leadership community. Niklas blends his superpowers as both a Global CIO (Assa Abloy) and a former Gartner research director in applying practical tools and templates for CIOs and their teams moving forward on their journey while also providing the larger picture framework and aligning to the “WHY” – which will prove useful for strengthening conversations at the CEO and Board level. The icing on this SustainableIT cake is the inspiration or desperation we all need to come to the determination that IT IS TIME TO TAKE A STAND for sustainability. There is no better function than IT to drive transformation, innovation and modernization across the organization and to enable the measurement and transparent reporting of outcomes.Kudos to Niklas and I will be sharing this book far and wide to my business network.

A must read playbook to accelerate technology leaders ability to advance sustainability initiatives
With tech at the center of advancing global sustainability, this playbook is a must read for all IT and sustainability leaders. Before this book, I had hundreds of conversations with IT and sustainability leaders – and most simply didnât know how to get started. Then came this playbook! Niklas has given IT leaders practical tools and templates to leverage in their journey, and equips them to drive business value conversations.

Probably the most pragmatic, comprehensive and execution-oriented book on the topic.Niklas Sundberg is an executive, an expert and a practitioner – thatâs why page of the book âbreathesâ it. No fluffy gimmicks.A must-read for any digital leaders who wants to be set up for success: CIOs, CDOs and their reports – and beyond – e.g. CFOs.

Easy reading with actionable examples and tools. Should be read by any IT manager

This book talks about the âwhyâ of combating climate change in a company setting, but so do many other books. This is the first book I have read that unapologetically gets into the nuts and bolts of âhowâ and âwhatâ – from easy wins and maturity models all the way down to configuration screens on popular software platforms. Itâs got a lot of content for anyone in the technology world seriously working towards Net Zero. Much recommended.

I treasure this book – it’s thorough, compelling yet a reference I believe so many of us need to return to repeatedly to see the ‘unarticulated’ need of humanity, society and the planet at large we are taking far too much time to address. Through this book, Niklas’ passion, thoughtful contribution and provocation – translates the acknowledgement of a critical reality we can no longer avoid or run away from INTO a focussed, high leverage strategy (surfacing IT as a low hanging fruit) that can become a perfect model for other industries, functional areas and leadership at large to follow and adopt. Niklas’ and his broad range of active contributors bring to life in practical, tangible action oriented terms – what and how to DO WHAT IT TAKES to bring about more sustainable business and create a world our future generation will thank us for.
