Great Adventure Story
I’ve owned the DVD version of Shogun, an old favorite, for many years. Wonderful, engaging story of adventure, romance, intrigue, all set in Japan of the 1600’s. Recently one of my DVDs was damaged and would no longer play. While looking for a replacement, I stumbled across this Blu-Ray re-release and got a copy. Picture quality is very, very good. Better than original and it all fits on 3 discs rather than 5. Money well spent! Highly recommended!

Classic Clash of the Cultures
One of the best dramatic series: Captivating characters, the history of European naval exploration, Catholic – Protestant “wars”, Japanese culture and history of feudal power struggles. The story of forbidden love anchors the plotline with palpable heat between the star crossed lovers. A bold bravura performance by John Rhys Davies as a Portuguese pilot with brash humor who steals scenes fore, aft and everywhere!

Artistic and technical review
I first watched the FX version of Shogun and was enthralled. So I decided to watch the 1980 version to see how they compare. My comments are directed to both the artistic and technical aspects.Artistic comments: Although the storyline is essentially the same between the 2 versions, the FX version is much better by far. In the 1980 version, most of the Japanese dialog is not translated, so you don’t see the political skills of Mariko in the FX version when she would subtly change the meaning of what was said. The 1980 version is brightly lit most of the time and has a lot of annoying music. In contrast, the FX version skillfully uses lighting, is often rainy, and uses music sparingly.Technical aspects: I started watching the first 2 episodes of the 1980 version from a 5-disk standard def borrowed from the library, then bought this blue-ray version to watch the rest. Each episode on standard def has its own disk. The blu-ray version definitely has better video quality, but it is not wide-screen and there are still a few scenes that appear to be standard def. Biggest complaint is that indexing is lacking in the blu-ray version – there is no scene selection, no progress indicator (hh:mm:ss), and no way to skip to the beginning of each episode (of the 5 as originally broadcast). So once you start one of the 3 blu-ray disks, be prepared to spend about 3 hours with it. Also, the blue-ray version includes this disclaimer on the back in very tiny print: “This program may have been edited from its original network version”.

It Good
When I put great effort, time and thought into a complimentary review it gets rejected by Amazon. However, if I write a non thought provoking and grammatically incorrect review such as âIt Goodâ there are no issues. So be it! My review for this product is âIt Goodâ.
