A Bank Street College of Education Best Children’s Books of the Year selection (2024)

There is much to see at the ballpark, and it all matters because it’s all matter.

In this fast-paced rhyming story, baseball and science fans alike will be delighted to see all the solids, liquids and gases that make game day extra special. As the camera zooms in on instant replay, things slow down long enough to see all those atoms in motion. The scoreboard, a slushie, and even the air – wherever you look, it’s matter in there.

With cleverly constructed, action-oriented illustrations that make learning about science simple and fun, this book knocks matter out of the ballpark and is sure to score a homerun with enthusiastic young readers.

A fun and informative book about matter!
Catherine Ciocchi did a wonderful job of mixing science with an entertaining story for kids with “Science, Matter and the Baseball Park.” The boppy, rhyming text moves swiftly along through a day at the ball game, something many kids and families can relate to. As it turns out, all types of matter (solids, liquids and gasses) can be found everywhere, from the helmets on the players’ heads to the slushies the fans are slurping! Such a great way to teach a normally “dry” subject to kids so they can thoroughly understand and enjoy it, too. Ciocchi has a natural ability for fun rhyme and the pictures by Burgen and Chantelle Thorne are lovely to look at. This one’s a home run!

Great book to show that science is everywhere – even at a ball game!
I read SCIENCE, MATTER, AND THE BASEBALL PARK right before going to a baseball game. I’ll never look at baseball the same. This fascinating picture book follows a father and daughter enjoying their day together at a ball game. The rhyming text cleverly explains the matter involved in the game including atoms, solids, liquids, and gases. What a fun way to introduce science concepts! The exciting illustrations are filled with action and show the diversity of people in the stands, on the field, and those that work to make it all come together. This is a great choice for baseball and sport fans.
