For the incoming Puritan settlers 17th-century New England was a place filled with fear and uncertainty. It was an environment that-coupled with a backdrop of religious extremism-bred an anxiety so intense it ultimately turned deadly. As a result of the 1692 Salem witch trials 19 men and women were hanged and one man was “pressed” to death following the untenable accusations made by several young girls from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. When the hysteria finally subsided and new community leaders came into power apologies were made and in 1711 legislation was passed that offered some financial restitution to the families of the victims. This program brought to you by THE HISTORY CHANNEL provides a comprehensive account of the actual events and examines the possible causes behind this highly notorious and puzzlingly complex period in early American history. DVD Features: Interactive Menus; Scene Selection.

Interesting and informative expose on the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692 in Massachusetts
Interesting and informative expose on the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692. The documentary featured what seemed to be excellent research from multiple sources as well as cultural and historical perspective regarding the people, place and era in which the witch trials occurred, as well as connecting it to modern Salem, MA. Afterthought: Some Americans still engage in the same type of scapegoating today in 2020. Examples include anti-gay, anti-Muslim, anti-Latino, anti-Democratic Socialist, etc. The actors, settings and audiences change but the play remains the same.

An Important Historical Film
History does repeat itself, just not exactly in the same way. Don’t be surprised if you watch enough history that you might start think you’re seeing it happening again today. Whether for educational reasons or something to watch, it shows how humans can be manipulated to hate their neighbors if they allow others to persuade them without proof in a court where you don’t need proof to convict someone.

Salem Witch Trials
History is very much of interest to me as try to become more acquainted with pieces of history that I am not familiar. It seems as time passes, what I have learned in the past has become fuzzy. I like having references that I can restore sections of history that I should have remembered from my time in school. Thanks for making this section of history available.

I play it every year
I bought this dvd for my classroom several years ago, and I play it every year, prior to teaching THE CRUCIBLE to my sophomores. It fits neatly into one 55 minute class period, and is filled with factual details. This dvd definitely helps motivate my students to read Arthur Miller’s play and gives them the historical perspective that they need to understand what they are reading.

Review
Very informational. I made a worksheet on it and show it for my students when teaching The Crucible. It’s pretty interesting, although I’m sure I’d have some sleepers if I didn’t have the worksheet go along with it. It works nicely with The Crucible and lasts exactly one 48 minutes class period.

Whilst not the definatitive documentary on the Salem Trials it is a very good overview which does bring up theories that some people overlook in their research. Worth watching and/or adding to your DVD collection.

I found the subject interesting. It was shocking that something got so out of hand so quickly. I’d recommend this.

This was a good educational DVD. I like to learn about various aspects of history, and I knew nothing about the Salem Witch Trials before I got this DVD. It was entertaining to watch, also kind of an appropriate DVD to watch around Halloween.
