Read this Book and Break Those Cycles!
What a fascinating book! This book was written due to the authorâs personal experiences with overthinking – it is easy to tell how deeply he understands the subject. The first thing that struck me was how the quotes used were so appropriate and actually inspiring! The actual science behind overthinking was eye opening, and reflection questions helped me really begin to understand myself – the concrete exercises are a hands on way to assist you through your journey. There are so many things I could say about this book – the sections on processing emotions were especially helpful – I loved the segues from one chapter to the next, and the mid book review. But my absolute favorite chapters were the actual physical things you can do to lower your heart rate and decrease your blood pressure – strategies to calm yourself down in the moment. And, the chapter on triggers and how to identify yours. But it doesnât stop there – it then actually helps you break the habits – and not by vague suggestions, but by actual steps you can take to break them.I cannot recommend this book enough!

This book will help you from being captured by an Overthinkers Anonymous Club
I like that this book goes into memory and hindsight as one of the ways we hold ourselves back, which then leads us to overthinking situations we’re faced with in the present. Critical thinking about our own self-talk while living in the present takes a bit of coordination, but just like any excercise, you get better at it with time. Kirk Teachout walks you through all the steps in Chapter 4.The best part for me about this book was learning how to recognize and reduce distractions while working from home on my own business, which in turn helped me reduce some of my stress that led to my own overthinking and indecisions. Chapter 5 really digs into the overwhelm most of us go through at some point in our lives. In that chapter, I discovered that I’m not the perfectionist I always thought myself to be after all, but rather used that as a facade to fuel a type of connection with others that I wished to have, but couldn’t maintain long-term.I learned in a later chapter that this was a secondary gain I’d become accustomed to, and that it was a learned behavior through generations in my family. A self-created overwhelm that again, led to more stress. I had been giving my power away through this perfectionist persona I’d created, channeling my power through her, and feeling zapped on all levels after a short amount of time.Chapter 7 is all about knowing your “triggers”, and I think it’s one of the most important parts of this book to study! I would have liked more “examples” of core beliefs and how we violate our own values in more specific terms than that was given, but there is definitely a great list given to sort through the most common ones for sure!Chapter 8 definitely gives you the framework to follow to help you through any of these aforementioned challenges, so make sure you’re actually DOING the suggested work, and not just mindlessly reading. Remember, FEAR is just False Evidence Appearing Real (though in the mountain lion scenario, it can also mean Eff Everything And Run!). Choose wisely and do the work suggested here, and this book will help you from being captured by an Overthinkers Anonymous Club.

Stop overthinking
I have always been an overthinker, but as I’m older now, I need to sleep. This book has helped me so much. Stop worrying what others think about you, complete tasks and stop your mind from getting overwhelmed. This book helps you make decisions without getting bogged down. You first have to identify what triggers your overthinking so you can catch it before it gets out of hand. Replace overthinking with something healthier. Overthinking can ruin relationships, cause fear and other things, but with the exercises, and techniques found in this book, you can live a more normal, healthier life.

Glad I am not overly overthinking, though now I understand myself better.
This is ME! I am an overthinker, and I suffer from stress, anxiety, etc. Whilst I know the triggers, i cannot understand why I have them nor how can i manage them, so this book teaches me how. It explains how the body/mind works to get to “Overthinking”. I can empathize with that. I enjoyed the famous quotes in each chapter. I learnt about the ‘pomodoro technique”, which I feel will be useful for my kids when they are doing homework, ha ha. Overall, this book also teaches one how to be a better person generally, not just the overthinking aspect. I wish there were more interactive parts, maybe that will be for part two of his book, where he can include more worksheets and examples. Overall, a good read.

Just what I need
Iâm all over the place with my reading habits, but Iâm very consistent with over thinking everything. This book has been very relatable already and I just started. I was surprised to find this excerpt and hope it lives up to its promise. I hate cookie cutter solutions as they rarely do me any good. I usually find Iâve heard the advice or the solutions before and they didnât help. My problems may not be that unique but they donât necessarily fit inside the defined box someone else built. Iâm enjoying the book and will definitely have to update when I get further into it. Itâs comforting to know Iâm not alone in the practice of overthinking and that solutions could be just on the horizon.

Good advice and well presented. I think many people will benefit from the ideas here. If I was to criticise it would be that there was too much emphasis on younger people overthinking. I think this is a tendency, irrespective of age.

I really like the structure of this book: each chapter presenting the information first; giving the reader time to reflect; encouraging the inner work with helpful interactive elements; offering a summary box to refresh what was learnt. The author imparts a lot of knowledge in a clear, easy to read format. The first Chapter, âBrain Painâ, gives an overview of the science behind overthinking, which was very interesting. Then, each chapter systematically takes the reader through all the steps necessary in recognising, understanding and overcoming the problem.I particularly liked the reflection questions and used these as journalling prompts to gain deeper insights.I will use the tools learnt in Chapter 8, âBreaking the Habitâ, for the rest of my life. It really is a gem of a book.
