Dood product, with room for improvement
I got the opportunity to check out the new Ocean Digital WR-50 Internet Radio Tuner HiFi component.I like the size, the front panel looks nice. The LCD display is TINY, you’re not likely going to see anything from a distance. It’s very lightweight.I like the preset buttons on the front panel (although the buttons feel a bit cheap to the touch) but feel Ocean Digital missed an opportunity here. Instead of only implementing four presets and leaving a bunch of wasted space between them and the volume knob, why not provide eight presets, or six but more than just four ?The packaging could use some updating in my opinion. I assume that Ocean Digital is positioning the WR-50 as a premium product, yet it’s packed inside a giant paper envelop shipped within a pulp-paper clam shell. My unit had scuff marks all over it’s exterior from rubbing during shipping. The Ethernet stack could use some help (surprised the hard wired Ethernet only supports 10baseT, that’s decades old!). If I put the device into standby mode, which honestly is seemingly pointless, when you come out of standby mode, it often takes a long time to reconnect to the WiFi. No idea why, and it is the only device on my network that exhibits this odd behavior. Also when you come out of standby mode, instead of going to your last known place on the WR-50, it simply goes back to the beginning of the menu system. Speaking of the menu system, it’s a bit surprising that the Internet Radio appliances default when started is NOT the Internet Radio app, so you have to mindlessly scroll thru a bunch of stuff you could care less about to simply get back to the Internet Radio app. What I like about it? It sounds great! Get a high res station and it sounds terrific! I tried both the optical digital out as well as the analog out to test it’s internal DAC and to also bypass it to a DAC costing several times what the Ocean Digital WR-50 costs, and was pleased to be able to use the fiber optic output to my preamp! Oddly it never produced individual song artwork, just a station identification default log was it.The remote is okay’ish. It has a lot of buttons, but once you get the hang of it, it’s mostly well laid out. It requires 2 AAA batteries [not included].It includes a nice compliment of inputs and outputs with a USB-2 port, 3.5mm Headphone jack, RCA connector, Optical (Toslink) and co-axial digital out (SPDIF). Also includes better than average RF antennas for Bluetooth and WiFi.The FM radio seems to work fairly well, but apparently DAB+/DAB aren’t supported in the U.S., so unable to test that feature.Overall this is a pretty good product, but it does have room for improvement.

Superior and remarkable Internet Radio Component. Truly sensational!
As an audiophile and videophile, my 20 year old Internet Radio Streaming component was just simply dated. I am so happy to find the Ocean Digital!Streams fantastic. Both internet radio and conventional AM/FM radio. Note: I am unsure if this receives HD Radio, or not, as I am just in the setting up stage.Bluetooth ready, includes a IR sensor remote, (2 AAA batteries not included), RCA composite audio cables, two Antennas that simply manually screw on the back of the component receiver, AC Power Adapter, (that is not marked Ocean Digital, or Internet Radio Tuner Component), and User Manual.Supports USB, and has a 2.4″ Color Display. Very large Digital Clock, menu and interface is nice, with Alarm Clock, dimmable color screen, which you can turn on or off….and includes 3.5mm headphone jack.Truly a very good and exceptional tuner. Some feedback. The AC Power Adapter is not marked, as I like to label all my Power Adapters, so when you re locate or move, it make everything more organized, and you’re not stressing out about powering up the wrong AC Adapter. Also, the component is fairly light weight. I’m all about high-end build quality materials and construction, and even though I am very pleased, it does not feel like a $1,000 component. For $219, this is priced right, and should give decades of listening pleasure.Truly a remarkable internet radio tuner for this price point.
