One of the Best Guitar Theory Books
I purchased this book after reading the reviews on Amazon and agree that it is one of the best guitar theory books out there, and consider it to be the “gold standard” of guitar music theory.I have been playing guitar for close to 40 years, mostly self taught and knew virtually no theory until about 3 years ago. I found this limiting to achieving a breakthrough to new playing skill and have an understanding of what I was doing. I started out with some of the basic books on theory, took some lessons and then got this book. Along the way, I bought many books that were not appropriate for my level and got frustrated. This book is perfect for those guitar players who have some experience playing, have been exposed to some theory but need to have all the concepts in one place to reinforce their understanding of the core concepts and then start getting exposure to the more advanced topics like diatonic progressions, harmonization, modes, chord substitution, etc.I would not recommend buying this book if you are a raw beginner with no music theory background. You will get overwhelmed as the book moves quickly into advanced concepts and topics. It does cover all the basic concepts in the beginning, but it will be difficult to get your brain around all this stuff without having some further training. I would suggest first buying some of the real basic thin and ” fun” music theory books to get your mind around scales and intervals. You can browse these “pocket size” manuals at most music stores. As others have pointed out, the book is logically and progressively laid out. This makes it a great reference. The accompanying CD is good for listening to the notes, scales, etc. I prefer a DVD format for the accompaniment, as the CD approach is a bit awkward. I’m not much of a fan of trying to browse a CD and look at a book at the same time. I leave this book on my living room coffee table and often will pick it up and review some of the chapters, just to reinforce some concept that I’m still getting my head wrapped around. If you are taking guitar lessons, I would definitely use this book to help structure your understanding of music theory with your instructor. I often found myself scratching my head after a 30 minute guitar lesson, then went to this book to get further grounded on the concept.

Great music theory book for guitar
I love this book by Tom Kolb. It is 104 pages jam-packed with the most important elements of music theory for guitar, including chord construction, chord progressions, and scale patterns for any key. I would recommend that EVERY guitar player study this book after completing six to twelve months of beginner guitar lessons. Knowing what is in this book can help you become a real musician. This is not an instruction book for the absolute beginner. The beginning student will (I think) require considerably more explanation. However, for any level of guitar player, this would be a great reference to use when taking lessons with a music teacher. If you already play another musical instrument, then go ahead and jump into Tom Kolb’s book immediately – – – it will probably be the quickest method to transfer your existing knowledge to guitar. If you are trying to teach yourself, then you will benefit by studying the basics of music theory before you use this book. I recommend The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Music Theory, 2nd Edition. After you finish a basic music theory book, then you should have not have any problems following the Tom Kolb Music Theory book. The book is very well organized and the content is presented effectively. While a music staff is consistently used throughout the book, neck diagrams or tab representations are also used to represent notes and chords. Therefore, even if you cannot read sheet music, you can use this book.Features I particularly appreciate include:- Pattern training neck diagrams for the following: (1) major scales; (2) minor scales; (3) minor pentatonic scale; (4) major pentatonic scale; (5) modes (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian); and (6) arpeggios.- Single-page tables for the following: (1) formulas (notes) for 39 chords types; (2) chords for each of the twelve major keys; (3) chords for each of the twelve minor keys; (4) minor seventh chords for each of the twelve minor keys.- Quizzes with answers in the back of the book.Believe me, this book is worth the price just to have a concise reference with the neck diagrams and the tables listed above. The book includes the Circle of Fifths (which is great); but it should do a better job explaining to the new guitarist how to APPLY the Circle of Fifths to one’s guitar playing.Table of Contents: The Fretboard; Theory Basics; Scales and Key Signatures; Intervals; Triads; Harmonizing the Major Scale; Chord Construction; Harmonizing the Minor Scale; Determining Key Centers; Blues Harmony and Pentatonic Scales; Modes and Modal Harmony; Other Scales and Modes, Chord/Scale Relationships, Arpeggios; Chord Substitution and Reharmonization.I wish they would sell this book without the CD (with ear training and demonstration tracks). According the back jacket of the book, the book by itself is only 40 percent of the cost of the package. There is one great feature of the audio CD: the guitar part is balanced hard-right, so if you adjust the balance entirely to the left the guitar part is eliminated, allowing you to play the guitar part yourself.

Good Reference Book
This is a very good reference book particularly for guitarists. Before reading this book, I had bits and pieces of music theory knowledge. After reading this book I understand how those bits and pieces fit together and the guitar fretboard and scales are no longer a mystery to me. I am unable to give this book five stars because I think this is more of a reference book and it would be difficult for an absolute beginner to learn from this book. The book ramps up pretty quickly. The explanations of concepts are terse (which is both good and bad – bad because beginners may struggle with it, good because it forces you to think deeply about the concept until you figure out why the book says what it says). Ear training exercises are nice but they also ramp up very quickly. Having said that, this is still a good book worth buying.

Very informative read. Written so you can understand it. This is music theory so if you are not into the heavy side of written music, this may not be for you.The purchase was good value for the money in my books.

Perfect book for learning music theory but some topic are not explained briefly like circle of fifths …other than that it’s worth the price….
