5.1 Mix is Positively Transformative! Buy now!
I am a *serious* hound for every physical form of Spatial Audio worth owning (SACD, DVD-A, Blu-Ray Audio and Quaddio), and it’s always a gamble to hear how the artists and engineers make use of the extra channels using albums we all know by heart.Spatial mixes vary from the boring – just move some of the reverb and echoes to the back for mild ambience – to the extreme – put any track anywhere you want in the mix, and sometimes they move around a lot.For me, the most impactful spatial mixes are those that manage to respect the original album while transforming it in a way that can only be described as an improvement. “What the artist probably would have done had 5.1 existed at the original recording.”By that measure, this 5.1 mix is EXCEPTIONAL! This was one of my first and most important albums back in the ‘80s, but to hear it unpacked across 5.1 (with fantastic audio quality) is truly like hearing it for the first time again. This disc is in the top 10% of my spatial collection, rivaling the truly unbelievable Depeche Mode 5.1 SACD releases on Mute ~20 years ago. One you hear the 5.1 mix, you will never, EVER go back!Well done, lads!

Blu-ray. I can’t do ATMOS (usually doesn’t sound right) . 5.1 mix doesn’t sound right to me [the mix] (hence the -star). So stereo in surround mode – which actually does sound excellent. So essential if your a huge fan.I picked up the other blu-ray release because this sounded so good. You snooze you lose!

I’ve always been fond of this record (I bought it on release day originally) and of late I’ve come around to the idea that it’s aged very well.So how do you improve on a classic? Give it to Stephen W Tayler to remix, it would seem. I’ve not tried the 5.1 yet, but the new 24/96 stereo mixes have lots of depth, detail and clarity. I’m not sure what kit one of the other reviewers is listening on, but through my vintage Celestion County speakers it sounds fab, with a bottom end that lets you know it’s there without dominating. The mix choices are also spot on. New Song is now a lot punchier for example, which is what it’s always needed. But it’s the choice to let many of the songs run “to the end of the tape” and fade into each other that is the prize here. It works spectacularly well with the more atmospheric pieces like Hide and Seek and the (IMHO) criminally underrated Don’t Always Look At The Rain.

Because of the other review I purchased this with trepidation. I’m sorry they didn’t like it but on my system it sounds tremendous. The lower end just thunders out of the speakers and the 5.1 mix is one of the best I have.
