Why do some web projects effortlessly soar to success while others stumble?
The answer lies in a single, overlooked secret: the transformative power of a meticulously crafted brief. Because if you get the brief wrong, then the design can’t be right.
Picture a world where these all-too-familiar web project stumbling blocks vanish into obscurity:
• The exasperating struggle to gain design approvals.
• Last-minute team additions throwing projects into chaos.
• Projects spiralling out of control, leaving you bewildered.
• The creeping expansion of project scope, threatening deadlines.
• Believing you’ve nailed the design, only to hear those disheartening words, ‘It just doesn’t feel right’.
With over two decades of experience in digital agencies, I’ve navigated its complex landscape time and again. I’ve seen it all – the good, the bad and the ugly and I’ve ‘cracked the code’ to website success: the art of crafting the all-important design brief.
Within the pages of this book, you’ll uncover a treasure trove of insights, guidance, and real-world examples. It will coach you in achieving alignment and consensus right from the project’s inception.
This book is for anyone involved in or seeking to influence the destiny of a web project. From designers to stakeholders at every level.

Very helpful
Needed a model to follow for an upcoming pitch. This short, simple book was a perfect starting point. It is very, very light. Anyone looking for intellectual or strategic depth will be disappointed.

About 20 years ago, maybe more, I decided to make my own website & after months of work produced a 5 page site which in retrospect was pretty good even by today’s standards (as long as you ignore most of what I think is called backend UX stuff). It was a massive failure because my customers were all from a demographic that weren’t online back then, but I’m still pretty proud of what I created.I am reviewing this book as a beginner with little technical knowledge on the topic.Looking to build a new site all these years later, I was amazed to find my HTML & CSS were still helpful, then fell down the rabbit hole of KU books & found UX/UI which led me to this book.Of the few I have tried to read so far, this stands head & shoulders above the rest, leaving me sad it isn’t the first in a series.I would love to read the authors next steps to see where good practice should take me.Every other book I have read so far on UX/UI WAS a pain point, ignoring the way a kindle book usually works & how readers choose to interact with them.Books where I cannot change the font size, or background colour, can’t bookmark, highlight or even one where every page of text is an image. Some left me feeling they were lifted from web pages with links removed. Here is a clearly written book, by someone who obviously understands his subject & applies it’s principles even when he isn’t designing a site.I have respect for those who walk the walk themselves. This is a quick read, focused on one small, but essential step in the process of site design. The beginning.Suitable not only for those learning to design sites for others, but could also be useful for people who want to have one designed for them, or for themselves, to help them think through what they actually want from their site.I ended this book not only inspired to move forward with my learning, but with a digital asset based on the advice included that helped to clarify my thinking & actually helped me think through how I view my business outside of web design.I think it will help me if I take on an employee as I will be able to explain what I want them to do & set clear guidelines. Not the intended result from reading this book, but valuable to me.I read a lot. This is one of the rare books that may actually boost my income in the long run & increase the quality of my output. If only the author could teach me to keep my reviews brief too.Highly recommended. After reading this on KU, I went on to buy a copy considering it money well spent & I’m following the author just in case he publishes anything else.Fingers crossed.

As someone who’s passionate about web design but struggled with the initial client interaction process, this book has been an absolute game-changer for me. The author’s approach to explaining the intricacies of gathering a web design brief is not only comprehensive but also incredibly user-friendly. What I appreciated most was how the book broke down the complex task of gathering client requirements into manageable steps. It offered clear templates, examples, and real-world scenarios that I could relate to and apply directly to my work.If you’re in the field of web design or planning to enter it, ‘How to Take a Web Design Brief’ is a must-read. I can’t recommend it enough; it’s a game-changer that has had a positive impact on my professional journey.
