What are the secrets to a healthy, happy, and wealthy retirement?

To answer that question, longtime Morningstar columnist and podcaster Christine Benz asked 20 retirement thought leaders to go deep on a single lesson that they believe contributes to success in retirement.

These lessons range from nitty gritty financial matters to quality-of-life considerations that help pre-retirees and retirees maximize their “time on earth” allocations.

On the financial side of the ledger, the book delves into knowing your retirement income style (Wade Pfau), understanding how your spending might change in retirement (David Blanchett), and organizing your portfolio to support in-retirement cash flows (William Bernstein).

Other interviews probe softer but no less important considerations, such as how to spend in order to optimize happiness (Ramit Sethi), the value of burnishing relationships later in life (Laura Carstensen), and living life so that you have no regrets in the end (Jordan Grumet). These lessons help soon-to-retire and already-retired individuals and their advisors tackle retirement with confidence, wisdom, and a specific plan for maximizing their financial and human capital.

    Rock Stars of Retirement Planning
Christine Benz has put together 20 rockstars in retirement thought, planning, and research to help us, yes all of us, plan for and execute a happy retirement. Retirement is most certainly not just about the numbers, but also the extremely important softer sides of retirement. Christine is a thought leader in all areas of retirement. This is excellent work and we will all be doing ourselves a great favor to read it.

  2. Book Case

    Excellent Advice
I love the format of this book. Benz interviews experts on the specific aspect of retirement they are a specialist in, and then we read that chapter in their own words. Then she summarizes the salient points they have made. I found this method was like sitting at a large conference table surrounded by experts who candidly told me what I needed to know about retirement. And all that wisdom for the cost of a book. What a gift.

A goldmine for those approaching retirement
Some books are so good, it’s hard to put them down. Such is the case with “How to Retire.” One of the blurbs describes the book this way: “Imagine if you could sit down with the nation’s leading experts in every aspect of retirement, tax and estate planning. Now you can!” It’s a perfect description. This book is an eminently useful field guide to every aspect of retirement. To be sure, it covers asset allocation and portfolio management, but it also goes into some of the less appreciated — but no less important — areas of retirement planning. Where should you live? How should you think about healthcare? How should you structure your time? When should you claim Social Security? All of these questions, and many more, are answered by the group of experts Christine Benz assembled for this volume. If you’re approaching — or even thinking about — retirement, this book will be an excellent companion.

    Very Helpful, Actionable Advice
Best retirement book I’ve read. This book contains a wealth of great guidance. One of the things I like about it is that it doesn’t give you THE answer but helps you figure out what is the best answer for you. And it’s really helped me have conversations with my forever whatever on what we want our post-work life to look like. Highly recommend.

    Great Information
My wife and I started our retirement journey 2+ years ago – her full time, me with a part time job in my field. While there certainly is math involved in the journey, it is so much more that this book discussed.

Great book but Audible version is horrible
I like Christine’s work and I appreciate she interviewing the experts. But the way audible book is structured is horrible. It’s like a third party is reading the book out. For ex Christine is talking with Mike and asking questions, each time a female voice comes out it starts with a prefix Christine and for response it says Mike. Another question in 15 seconds audio goes Christine and then Mike. This so annoying for a user. Just keep it like a 1:1 interview even it’s read by another person. We understand from context who is the interviewer and interviewe

Good for CFPs, young people with retirement far ahead, newly retired and well into retirement
As a Financial Planner I’m well aware of Christine and a few of the people interviewed for this book. I was concerned that it would be too basic but it has great advice, even for practiced financial planners. The tax, housing and healthcare chapters are worth buying the book alone. They don’t just give you information, they give advice on how to apply the information that they see in their specialty. I read a lot of these books in my business and this is really good – I don’t usually write reviews.

Christine Benz’s “How to Retire” is an absolute must-read for anyone looking to secure their financial future and plan for a comfortable retirement. Whether you’re just starting to think about retirement or are already nearing that phase, this book provides practical, easy-to-understand advice that truly resonates.Benz has a remarkable ability to draw amazing insight from her interviews to break down complex financial concepts into clear, actionable steps. The book covers everything from assessing your retirement needs and building a savings plan, to managing taxes, healthcare costs, and investments post-retirement. I particularly appreciated the insights on creating a sustainable withdrawal strategy and how to adjust it as circumstances change. What sets this book apart is not just the comprehensive financial guidance, but also the emphasis on the emotional aspects of retirement. The book offers thoughtful advice on how to prepare for the lifestyle changes that come with this major life transition, ensuring that readers feel confident not just financially, but mentally and emotionally as well.If you’re looking for a holistic, well-researched, and reliable retirement guide, this is the book to read.

Retirement planning – yes I am that old – is a complex subject. It’s easy to think that it’s all about money but this book acknowledges that it’s about much more. Christine Benz interviews a number of experts in different fields to deliver 20 chapters on various aspects of retirement. Some of the financial and healthcare stuff is very US-focused so will be of limited value to readers elsewhere. The other topics though, around lifestyle adjustments, housing needs, spending changes, portfolio choices, etc, has pretty universal resonance. This has the potential to be quite a dry topic but here it’s presented in a very readable and entertaining way. Whether you’re hurtling towards retirement or merely contemplating it from afar you should find some useful takeaways here.
