The fate of a lonely girl becomes part of a town’s shameful secret history in Thriller Award winner Jennifer McMahon’s terrifying story of guilt, retribution, and one tragic Halloween night.
Thirty-four years ago, on October 31, poor Hannah Talbott took part in a scavenger hunt gone violently wrong. The mean girls made sure of it. To this day, for a haunted local mother, the most unsettling Halloween costume of all is an urban legend they call Hannah-Beast. It’s a reminder of the past she can’t forget. Especially tonight when it’s come back, so close to home.
Jennifer McMahon’s Hannah-Beast is part of Dark Corners, a collection of seven heart-stopping short stories by bestselling authors who give you so many new reasons to be afraid. Each story can be read in a single sitting. Or, if you have the nerve, you can listen all by yourself in the dark.

Bullies getting what they deserve
This was a short – 48 pages – tale of what happens to those who bully someone else. If only justice came to every bully like it did Amanda in the end. It had a hint of Poe’s Tell-Tae Heart in it aka when the guilt of our actions mentally eats us alive.

Haunting Tale of Evil’s Long Shadow!
Inside older children is a mixture of caring concern and mischievousness, honesty and lies, good and evil — all struggling to control the youthful being. Sometimes, especially on Halloween, the worst takes hold until the unthinkable happens, things impossible to undo or retrieve, changing everything forever! In this frightening short novella, Jennifer McMahon creates images and tensions you won’t be able to forget. Ugh! Reading it once might change your life, you’ll likely not want to read it again.Something there is that attracts us to stories that scare us, impressions that take us too close to the edge of horror, awakening within us for just a moment the shock of unforgivable things we desperately hope will never happen to us or by us. Ouch! You’ll never see Halloween the same way ever again. Yikes!Thankfully this short morbid read was quickly over, although well written, a bit too believable to be fun. I appreciated the Audible narration that made the horrifying storytelling even more traumatizing and terrifying.Perhaps, I might explore the author’s other works, but only if they have nothing to do with trick-or-treating!

Woah
Woah. Was not expecting that ending. This told a horrific story about many losses and staying quiet when you should speak up. I thought it was good, kids don’t understand the significance of their actions and this puts it into perspective

predictable but decent
While this short store was very predictable it was pretty good. Also sad because bullies suck and make people who want to fit in absolutely miserable.

Makes Bad Karma Look Like A Field Day
Move over “Mean Girls” Jennifer McMahon just bested you with “Hannah Beast”! What starts out as a modern re-telling of the classic popular girls vs. the sweet new girl concept, turns into 44 pages of twists and turns that gradually build anxiety in the reader, and ultimately lead to an ending that makes basic bad karma look like a field day. Serving as the perfect mini read, Hannah Beast is like putting on your shoes and realizing too late that one shoe has become the hiding place of a black widow. This story’s venom swirls around in your brain, slowly seeping into each groove until you’ve read every single word, at which point, it’s already killed you. So come on, say it, do it for Hannah-Beast, say BOO!”Hannah-Beast” is from the DARK CORNERS collection- an Amazon Original collection of intense micro horrors!ÂÂ

3/5
This one was actually kind of sad. Poor Hannah, poor girl never even had a chance. Kids can be so incredibly cruel. The story was good, but I saw the ending a mile away.

The past catches up with Amanda when her daughter wants to dress up as Hannah-beast
Hannah-beast is a local Halloween character. A girl who dressed up, in a clown wig, boa, cape and blue face paint, one Halloween and said Boo instead of Trick or Treat. Nothing good came of that long ago Halloween. And nothing good comes this Halloween!

I’ve read a few of McMahon’s books, and been very impressed so had high expectation for this story. I was not disappointed. I really enjoyed this story. The story moves back and forth in time between this Halloween and the terrible night thirty-four years ago. I liked this. Hannah is your typical bully victim, quiet, vulnerable and an easy target. What happened to her is heart-breaking. You know from the start who the haunted local mother is and where the story will lead which was a slight disappointment. Still, Hannah-Beast is a good tale.

Just what horror stories should be. Concise, to the point and the twist or jump at the end. Will definitely be picking up more of this author’s work.
