When they met at an airport, it was love at first sight. But in time, everything collapsed. As an unnamed but unforgettable woman muses on her life—from meet cute to marriage and parenthood—her recollections inexorably build to a devastating truth. In this shattering performance, Carey Mulligan, star of the critically lauded drama An Education, captivates audiences with playwright Dennis Kelly’s harrowing ruminations on family, ambition, gender, and violence. An acclaimed Off-Broadway play, the gut-wrenching world of Girls & Boys now thrives as an Audible Theater production.
After the play, this program includes an interview with Tony-winning playwright Dennis Kelly, who shares the inspiration behind his work.
Note: Girls & Boys is intended for a mature audience and contains graphic descriptions of violence.

Absorbing, funny, disturbing, and ultimately, heartbreaking
I was fortunate enough to see Carey Mulligan perform this play live at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theater in NYC, and after hearing the twist near the end, was eager to listen to the monologue again to see if I had missed any clues along the way. I’m glad I did. The reading is brilliant; there’s a very good reason that people like Ben Brantley, Stephen Daldry, David Hare and Paul Dano all view Mulligan as one of the greatest actors of her generation. I’m less clear on whether I share what appears to be Dennis Kelly’s take on the difference between the nature of men and women, but even though his views may differ from my own, I enjoyed very much thinking about the ideas he floats. The excerpt you’ll hear if you download a sample is from the beginning of the play, and while Mulligan is excellent– almost like a terrific stand-up comic in relating sharp and amusing anecdotes– be warned that the dialog and subject matter get much, much darker. This is troubling material and not for the feint of heart, but it’s well worth experiencing the shock and the pain. I strongly recommend this download.

I got this as part of being an audible member and was allowed to listen to this from the promotion of two free original listens each month. I basically chose this because of Carey Mulligan. I knew she wouldn’t have attached herself to this if it didn’t mean something to her. And after hearing it, I can see why she agreed to do this. It was sometimes sweet, sometimes funny, and always brutally honest. Then it became twisted and dark. I loved the way Carey acted out the story, her voice was mesmerizing and the story itself was incredibly well written. I know this won’t be for everyone, but I personally really connected to this. I know this will stay with me for a long time.

Phenomenal – you had to see it live
I saw this show last year with little-to-no expectations. I was blown away by Carey Mulligan’s performance – I laughed, I cried, I cherished this show. While I enjoyed the recording of the show, it’s not quite the same of watching it. The joy, the sadness, the determination that Carey exhibited can only really quite be felt live – her face says it all, and it’s not the same without seeing it. It was one of the most amazing experiences I ever had, and I’m glad I can relive it by listening to this recording.

Very short play for the cost
I liked the concept; I liked the narration. The book held my interest (but was depressing). The biggest issue I have is the cost for 1.45 hours of narrational content. Way too expensive for such a short play. I learned to check the details next time.

Carey Mulligan made this amazing play even better
Plot Summary (No spoilers!): This is a one-person play in which a woman tells of her history and life, slowly revealing a terrible secret. What you liked: The play was very powerful to listen to, but it snuck up on me. At first I thought it was just going to be a one-person monologue that was interesting, and funny, but not overly emotional. I was very wrong. It was incredibly well-written, with both breaking the fourth wall type dialogue and then flashback vignettes. Very appropriate for today’s world, sadly, and surprising. What you did not like: There honestly was not much I did not like. The play made me laugh out loud at times with her descriptions of situations, and then tear up with her thoughts and retelling of events. If audiobook, performance thoughts: Carey Mulligan did an AMAZING job. I highly recommend this audiobook.

5 star in every way.
I appreciate the opportunity to listen to this gratis per Audibleâs addition of perks to its members. It was by far one of the best, albeit short, I have had the privilege to experience. As a play, I perceive it as more than just a read (listen). Carey Mulligan does a better than 5 star performance. As for the story, it may take you to a place you didnât want to go. But you should, you really should. We are all stronger than we imagine we can be. Thank you Ms. Mulligan for the gift of your talent.

The worst possible male violence.
Dennis Kelly does an excellent job of presenting the female perspective on lifeâs many vicissitudes. This play offered as a single player monologue is well crafted and smart. What the female says and thinks is witty and engaging. The topic of the play concerns male violence the worst possible kind. Because of the enchanting style the story is easy and enjoyable reading. I heartily recommend it.

Listen to the Audible audiobook, phenomenal
Stage play that was brought to life”We didn’t create society for men, we created society to stop men.”Carey Mulligan knocks it out of the park. The story was very raw and disturbing, Dennis Kelly has a talent to write about some deep hurt very honestly.
