John Piper Offers 6 Habits to Spur a Lifetime of Wisdom and Wonder for the Glory of Christ
Humans are hardwired to learn. We immerse ourselves in stories, observe the intricacies of the world, and seek educational opportunities. But lifelong learning is far more than acquiring information or completing a degree. It is a happy quest informing the habits of our minds and the affections of our hearts. And for the Christian, the goal is richer and deeper joy, to the glory of God and the eternal good of others.
In Foundations for Lifelong Learning, longtime pastor John Piper casts Christian education as the process of growing in our ability to navigate God’s word and world. Piper introduces readers to 6 vital habits―observe accurately, understand clearly, evaluate fairly, feel appropriately, apply wisely, and express compellingly. Ultimately readers will be encouraged to find Christ in and above all things―seriously and joyfully glorifying God, no matter their vocational calling.
Appeals to Students and Educators: Explores 6 habits to inspire a lifetime of learning, wisdom, and wonder Offers a Biblical Perspective: Teaches how lifelong learning ultimately connect to God, his word, and our world Countercultural: Explains how one’s vocation, degree, and monetary success are not always representations of quality lifelong learning Written by John Piper: Author of Don’t Waste Your Life; Come, Lord Jesus; Desiring God; and Providence

Vintage Piper
I thought I was getting a book about lifelong learning and finishing well, but this book is much more than that. The habits of mind that Piper unpacks are as applicable to the young as they are to the old. Itâs an excellent read and I highly recommend it to all.

Not what I was expecting
I liked this book. It has very good and moving words. The inspiration and the enlightenment is surely there. However, I was not expecting it to be so Christian like and by Christian like I meant religious or Bible based I guess? Although Id like to believe I am religious or spiritual. I just wasnât expecting it, especially since the cover shows nothing that would indicate otherwise. From my POV anyways. It definitely through me off. All in all the book is beautiful and very well put. Definitely tons of wisdom. Just be mindful that it is Christian based and does involve biblical information (:

Great for the Intentional Learner
This has been a great exploration into a way of thinking for lifelong learning. I’m sure different great thinkers could come up with different focuses for lifelong learning but I really enjoyed Piper’s layout and discussion on each focus. He emphasizes observation, understanding, evaluation, feeling, application, and expression. Focuses are all supplemented with Christian reflection from the Bible. While the six focuses are clearly progressing on the previous one, I would actually suggest reading this book once straight through and then maybe going back to a specific focus that interests you. The discussion in each of the six main chapters has a lot of good conversation and things to think about but you can easily forget what you were reading two chapters ago. I did appreciate that the end of each chapter had a paragraphing recapping the chapter’s focus.Piper has established himself throughout his life as a deep thinker and his insights combined with scripture help the believer to be intentional with learning. The book is easy to read for any adult and it’s broken up into digestible thoughts. Even concepts that are simple on paper are given good insights to help the believer in their learning process. This is definitely a good book for the intentional learner. Of course, anyone can learn but having a resource like this can help you make the most of that process. I would gladly recommend this book, especially to a believer.

Littered with Scripture References
Well, I am not a Piper fanatic like many are in my circle, but I did enjoy most of my start into this book. It is littered in topical scripture references. The first chapter (as far as I have made it) also contained numerous quotes of my favorite author, C.S. Lewis. It is endorsed by Albert Mohler who carries my favorite news podcast. The physical aspects of the book are quite pleasing and of good quality.

CLASSIC PIPER!
I have read several books by John Piper. None were duds. Perhaps my favorites are When I Donât Desire God and The Supremacy of God in Preaching. This latest offering has all the things we have come to expect of a Piper book: God-centered, engaging style, and an earnestness that forces you to consider your own life in light of the Bible. This is a terrific, and short book (only 171 pages) on what true, Christian learning looks like.Highly recommended!

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to teach in a Christian school. Many grapple with what teaching Christianly really means. John Piper does a great job providing a framework for lifelong learning. Education in Serious Joy will help you bring glory to God and love to others, setting them an example to do the same.
