Facing Monsters digs deep into the psyche of West Australian surfer Kerby Brown, a man whose connection with the ocean runs as deep as his love for his family. Far more than just a surfing story, it’s an unapologetic musing into the essence of Kerby and his family as we join them on his quest to ride a ferocious slab wave in the deep Southern Ocean that no one on the planet has surfed before.

Wow! Amazing footage of crystal clear huge ocean waves!
Amazing but nothing I’ll be trying anytime soon! I can relate to their story however and it makes sense to me. Whoever filmed this did an amazing job! I never seen such spectacular clear gigantic ocean waves like this. Astonishing!

Life is dangerous, might as well surf monsters
There’s a short moment halfway through the film when his wife is explaining why she puts up with his monster wave obsession: Life is inherently dangerous, cruel, and evil. Millions of people choose substances like drugs and alcohol to cope. This man found therapy in chasing monster waves. I for one applaud his courage, not just to surf waves that most would never attempt, but also to be honest about his demons. Some of us understand that our lives are a fraction of a microsecond in this Universe, and we might as well live it to the fullest while we’re here. A truly thought-provoking documentary that I thoroughly enjoyed and encourage everyone to give it a watch.

    Don’t be so naive, Leonard.
Just be cool, blood. Nurse-lady gon get you The mecicide.Do it, you’re wasting your life right now. You know you want to. That’s why you’re here. Face it.I wanted to once, too. I was there. So I did.Now I’m here, and I ain’t NEVER looking back again.

    A true pioneer
What Kirby does is insane, as we know the result from tip towing the line haha. However, his knowledge and passion for the ocean really drives this film. Every slab he surf seems so foreign, unique, and mysterious it’s like he takes us into another world. The film navigates the consequences between family versus seeking a god given ability to ride these slabs with ease. Thank you for putting everything on the line Kirby!

Maybe one of the most intense and real surf docs I’ve seen
This is beautifully filmed/scored, and such a well told, intense story…. a rare combo for a surfing documentary and one I’ll watch a few times. Well done, and be careful out there Kerby!

    Didn’t finish watching this
I like the surfing parts of this but didn’t care about the whole “my life was in shambles” personal stuff that had nothing to do with surfing. I thought this was gonna be like another “Riding Giants” surf film. I couldn’t finish watching this. My wife didn’t like it either. Maybe I can give this to a surfing buddy as a gift or something.

    Hang on for the ride
A visceral experience that is both beautiful and frightening.

    Breathtaking Cinematography
This is one of the most beautifully shot films I have ever seen. The slow motion footage of the waves was amazing. The story of Kerby’s quest and drive was extremely compelling, and watching him surf was exhilarating. I both understood him and found myself begging him to stop…This is not to be missed.
