    A staggering achievement
Postmodern gets a rap for being self-indulgent and not about “anything”. This is the film that should disprove that allegation for anybody, and it does so in effective, straightforward ways. The acting, cinematography, directing, and score are all beyond solid and this is VITAL because if any of these elements were a notch below the needs of the film, it would all collapse. The transfer is great, but it is the emotional truth and growth that make this a must-watch in any format.

    The Laundromat Has You.
First the not so good. As a family drama about a Chinese-American family, it was inevitable that there would be Chinese dialog with English subtitles. Regrettably, the subtitles are so tiny, so extensive, and yet so fleeting that a lot gets missed. At one point the subtitles were white against a blue sky and all but invisible. Really?Second, there is ALOT to unpack in this movie. Reconcile yourself to at least 2 viewings to get 60% of everything that’s going on in here. It’ll take at least that long to sort out the subtitles. There are also enough Easter Eggs early on to hard boil feed Chicago. There is no coherent way to summarize this movie. Itd be like trying to staple Jello to a tree.Remember how you felt about The Matrix? Innovative, dazzling, literate, inspired, moving. Imagine that instead of the 2 sequels that were made, there were dozens of sequels set in a world with 2000 distinct, but similar, Matrices. And that humans and the machines were sliding back and forth between them, like the Agents, not struggling for supremacy, but trying to preserve and protect their realties and their loved ones. Humans trying to contend with the reality that “self” can be wildly different from place to place. Now imagine you binged them all on fast forward. Amazingly, all of it made perfect sense. This movie jumps around from family drama, to personal self exploration, to Kung Fu masterpiece, to accomplished, if sometimes vulgar slapstick, to small business angst fest, to Quantum Leap on meth, and it does it all seamlessly.Michelle Yeoh is superb. Look for a big star in a small part having a ball chewing the scenery.Resign yourself. If you are any kind of cinefile, you are going to have to deep dive into EEaaO sooner or later. Go on,, beat the rush.

As it’s weirdly not available physically here in the UK, I decided to import the US version. Thank goodness 4k discs aren’t region coded, and double thank goodness that all the bonus material is included on that disc, as the Blu-ray itself is coded region A, and my Panasonic UB9000 wasn’t having any of it (I’ve read that supposedly stopping the disc and launching it by pressing “top menu” works for many discs, but I couldn’t get it to work). The 4k image is perhaps a little soft, but looks pretty great. Dolby Vision enhances the picture greatly, and unlike what I’ve read about the European 4k disc, doesn’t have any “too dark” issues. Audio is also top notch. The film itself revels in often being utterly ridiculous – watch out for “Raccacoonie” – but has a lot of heart. I wasn’t sure I was going to like it, but it really grew on me, so I knew I had to get a copy.
