Products, technologies, and workplaces change so quickly today that everyone is continually learning. Many of us are also teaching, even when it’s not in our job descriptions. Whether it’s giving a presentation, writing documentation, or creating a website or blog, we need and want to share our knowledge with other people. But if you’ve ever fallen asleep over a boring textbook, or fast-forwarded through a tedious e-learning exercise, you know that creating a great learning experience is harder than it seems.
In Design For How People Learn, Second Edition, you’ll discover how to use the key principles behind learning, memory, and attention to create materials that enable your audience to both gain and retain the knowledge and skills you’re sharing. Updated to cover new insights and research into how we learn and remember, this new edition includes new techniques for using social media for learning as well as two brand new chapters on designing for habit and best practices for evaluating learning, such as how and when to use tests. Using accessible visual metaphors and concrete methods and examples, Design For How People Learn, Second Edition will teach you how to leverage the fundamental concepts of instructional design both to improve your own learning and to engage your audience.

Dan Black –
A fantastic book for new and experienced learning professionals!
I think this might be the best book I’ve ever read that is related to the learning and development industry. Julie deconstructs complex concepts and ideas in relatable and easily understandable ways. I recommend this work for all my clients developing their L&D or Training Depts. It’s easy to read and reference and has a wealth of information derived from more recent research. I find the lack of “clinical” or “academic” language refreshing and even enjoyable.

Design with confidence.
This book is engaging from start to finish. The concepts are presented with analogies, examples, and illustrations, making the material easy to grasp and apply. Supported by the latest research, the information is quite helpful for anyone interested in creating meaningful and compelling learning experiencesâa must-read.
Jennifer Schroeder –
Great introduction to learning design!
This book offered an excellent discussion of how people learn and the best methods and considerations for designing learning experiences to promote learner success. I have been in field applications roles for several years and I’m shocked at how much of this information was news to me (…and very sorry to my previous trainees for all the ways in which I now see that my earlier courses were lacking). This was a great read and I strongly recommend it to anyone who is sincerely interested in designing better trainings!

Useful book
I liked that this book was easy to read and broke down complicated contacts in simple terms. Itâs a usual book for anyone who is looking to go into instructional design.
Kyle Schutter –
Possibly the best informational book I’ve ever read
The writer is funny and engaging throughout. She kept giving mental models for how to approach situations in learning as well as other references. I read the book very slowly as I am also building a learning game for my team. Every new insight she gave I immediately went to implement that in my game.
Michal Hope Brandon –
Insightful
This book offers so much insight into the world of instructional design. I’m using it as I upskill to transition out of education and the examples given plus the knowledge shared by an expert make this one of the best resources I’ve found.
MysticMan –
Really good book!
Even though I have a degree in psychology I learned something on just about every page. The way it is written makes it interesting, lots of graphics and examples. Some books on this topic are too academic and boring, but not this one. It is written in a way that the author is putting into practice what she teaches. It is engaging. I read it all the way through. I plan on using the knowledge gained this book in my own courses to help learners be fully engaged in the content. Def worth the read.

Good for beginners
This book is good for those starting out in the field of training or teaching, but not well suited for experienced professionals.
Amazon Customer –
I am an experience L&D professional and instructional designer, and wanted to go back to the foundations to continue to improve my knowledge and grow my toolkit. This book has helped me do just that! Thank you, Julie, for a fantastic resource!

Gente, que livro. Simples, fácil de ler, excelentes ilustrações e explicações, esse livro tem tudo o que eu precisava. Foi caro, mas valeu cada centavo.
Lauren –
I found this book easy to read and easy to make sense of. Would recommend to anyone interested in improving their knowledge of instruction design.
