A Life-Saver
Bill has probably saved millions of lives, because addiction is, as he taught us, a life-and-death matter. When you really come to know and understand that, and simply do as the Big Book prompts you to do, one day at a time, you can obtain long-lasting sobriety, and now in a variety of addiction recovery groups. (Most people in AA discover that they are multiply addicted. If you aren’t an alcoholic, but eat, shop, smoke and gamble, it’s all the same: addiction. You can’t “will” it away; you can’t “control” it. You can’t “just drink on the weekends” or “just drink beer” or have or do “just one more” of anything. Your addiction has to stop now, or you’re likely to, at the very least be unhealthy on every level – or die. In some ways, addiction is a form of suicide; often slow and agonizing. So if you can’t stop doing a substance or a process (like gambling or shopping), cancel that trip to Cancun and take one to a meeting in your area for your particular addiction. At first, you’ll hate it. Then you’ll keep going back, and eventually make some of the best friends of your life.

An homage to the founder of AA
This biopic was beautifully done and it is clear, it is meant to honor the founder of AA. To some degree, it also does the same with his legal spouse, Louise. Is it a balanced depiction of him? No. It is meant as an homage. Would I have liked it to be closer to facts? Yes, only so that it can be clearly seen he was human from beginning, middle and end.I took out one star only because….It is now available knowledge that Bill had many sexual relationships along the way and that, according to some records, admitted that his depression is a by-product of his guilt as presenting himself in a less than honest way regarding his marital situation. Bill did NOT want to be on the cover of Time magazine bec of the chasm which would be created between him and every other anonymous alcoholic. Certainly it can be argued that had his string of infidelities been admitted/allowed perhaps, maybe, the deification would be less prevalent. It is understandable that the “white washing” or “sanitizing” of the his married life was being “managed” bec of its possible impact to the organization. There is at least a bit of a ‘hint’ at the “white washed” aspects of Bill’s life by including Helen Wynn’s contribution to his later life. Of course, it is still only included as a means that adds to the very presentable, deified figure of Bill. I do NOT think sharing his sexual exploits which he bragged about (according to accounts) takes away fr what he helped create for anyone struggling with alcoholism; it provides a relatability and humanity to what his life was. (Interestingly enough, there is now SAA, sex addicts anonymous — something which would have helped Bill.) In the end it can be expected that a cult-deification eventually occurs. This is the way of the world.[PS Re the predisposition of humanity to be drawn to the cult of heroic personalities, I recommend listening to one of Neville Goddard’s lecture on YouTube, “Call Upon The Self”. This will perhaps relieve the torment of living with the inner self-condemnation which plagues man’s sleeping mind.]

HE CAME, HE SAW, HE CONQUERED–A LIFE FULFILLED
ALTHOUGH I AM NOT AN ALCOHOLIC, I BELIEVE THAT AA HAS APPLICATIONS FOR EVERYONE. I WANTED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE HISTORY OF AA AND IT’S FOUNDER. HEROIC LIFE, DEEPLY MEANINGFUL DOCUMENTARY.GREAT LESSON IN MR. WILSON OVERCOMING PERSONAL OBSTACLES IN HIS YOUTH, NEVER GIVING UP, WALKING 5 MILES A DAY THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE, STAYING MODEST AND AWAY FROM PROFIT AND FAME. UNFORTUNATELY, HE DIED FROM THE SIDE EFFECTS OF ANOTHER ADDICTION–SMOKING.FOR THOSE WHO CONCENTRATE ON ANY OTHER PART OF HIS LIFE– YOU ARE FOOLISH AND TAKING YOUR EYE OFF THE PRIZE. HE COULD HAVE KEPT HIS EPIPHANY A SECRET AND JUST SAVED HIMSELF!! BUT HE OPENED THE DOOR– TO THOSE HE COULD HELP AND TO THOSE WHO WOULD BITE BACK.

I really enjoyed the old
I have read much of Bill Wilson’s writings and read two biographies. Several friends have watched this DVD with me, and they were all impressed by the frank presentation. AA was, and still is, controversial, as was its co-founder Bill W. I really enjoyed the old, archival footage that gave a real sense of the concurrent times that defined AA.I do not take sides for or against AA and other “Twelve Step” programs. I do want to note that AA is still here and growing where others have gone by the wayside e.g. “The Oxford Group.” It seems to me that The Oxford Group placed personalities before principles. This DVD is a must-see for anyone with an interest in addiction to alcohol or who is in recovery. I spoke late last year with a prominent mid-south psychiatrist who consults with rehab centers.. I agreed not to attribute his remarks. He said, “I have dried out a lot of drunks. I have never seen one stay sober for very long outside AA.”My personal thoughts are that we cannot know what someone else has experienced or what they face daily. AA and other Twelve Step groups have open meetings that anyone can attend. Maybe we all need some fellowship … some human kindness. I pray for us all.
