Even if you haven’t used GarageBand for iPad before, chances are you’ve heard a lot about it. When this iOS version of Apple’s popular GarageBand for Mac application debuted in 2011, rave reviews began rolling in, and Apple has improved its performance and added features since then.
If you’ve ever used GarageBand for Mac, you’ll find yourself quite comfortable here — the two apps have a lot in common. If you haven’t, don’t worry — we cover everything you’ll need to know in this guide.
But, either way, prepare yourself for a unique experience. That’s because of the unique touch interface of the iPad. Apple’s GarageBand for iPhone app features several great software instruments that you can play just by touching the screen. This makes the experience of playing a guitar, for instance, or a drum set very natural for anyone who’s ever played a musical instrument, and much more fun!

This is good. What you need without the fluf.
Of the handfull of books on garageband for ios (iPad, iPhone, iPod) via Amazon I chose this one. I am so happy with the purchase. After glancing through the book I already found how to do a few things I was not able to figure out on my own. One was playing higher and / or lower notes than the ones included entering on a given instrument. This book has the information you want with out the filler. I can’t wait to get back to creating some awesome tunes with the help of this book.

Decent for the right purpose
My 12 year old son used it for a project at school to quickly learn a little more about GarageBand. For him it was useful. However, most of everything in here you could reasonably figure out yourself or from using the help, or even Internet sites. If you want a quick start and prefer a book, I would say this is fine for you.

Got me started
This book helped me get started with GarageBand. I had avoided getting into it basically because I hate the hassle of learning new software. Anyway the book has helped soften the learning curve. I gave four stars because the book and illustrations are clearly from an earlier version of GarageBand so it takes a bit of a mental leap to relate the book to 2023 software – but if I can do it anyone can. Made my first songs and done some editing after 2 days. As I said if I can do it anyone can.

Decent enough
This really is a bare bones instruction manual. Maybe too much so. I can see it being a bit confusing to someone who has never used the Garageband application. The first chapter talks about the control bar and all the controls on it. However, it doesn’t show a picture of it. Just an explanation. Granted most people will be able to figure out where it is, but I thought it was a little incomplete to leave that out. There are pictures in the book, but they are in black and white and would be much easier to see if they were in color. There are also a few pictures that don’t line up with the description. For example on page 18 there is a picture of a guitar tuner, with the caption “Effects-Allows you to apply popular guitar effects….” and on page 19 it has a picture of stompboxes with the caption “To change settings on the guitar amp controls” this is NOT the same thing. I also felt that in some places it left you kind of stranded. When it shows how to use the guitar amp, with a real instrument, part of the advice given is “You will probably have to buy some kind of third-party adaptor….” I think it would have been a good idea to give some suggestions as well as how to connect everything instead of just suggesting you look online or at a music or computer store. For the price it’s a decent book and will get you started on the basics. However I think a far better book is “Make Music with your iPad” by Ben Harvell. It gives you everything you need to get started and I would recommend that book over this one.

the Manual we all need
This very short and very concise guide to Garageband for iPad should come bundled with the app. It’s the manual we all need. I learned a lot that I plan to put to immediate use.

Dad’s birthday.
Dad recently bought himself and iPad mini and I bought this for him for a quick reference. I ordered kind of late, but the item arrived just in time for his birthday. It should be helpful for him.

Not what i expected
Only a very high level overview of garageband for ipad. No help for the newbie at all. Expected some step by step examples for creating tracks.

A very quick and insightful guide
This was such a great guide I was in very little time able to learn everything I needed to start editing on my iPad.

While it was a quick and easy to read overview, it didn’t answer some key questions. Recommended but not highly.

You’ll be done with this in 10 minutes. Worth a flick through, but little in it that isn’t quickly obvious.
