Based on the hit TV series, a murder at exclusive spa resort leaves a small circle of suspects for the British detective inspector on the case. DI Richard Poole has been seconded from London to the beautiful Caribbean island of Saint Marie. More comfortable in woolen suits than short-sleeved shirts, he’s struggling to adapt to his new home. But this paradise is about to get deadly.
When self-appointed guru Aslan Kennedy gets murdered in his spiritual retreat for wealthy holidaymakers, it’s down to DI Poole to find the killer.
The murder took place in a locked room with five other people inside, and when someone confesses, it seems an open and shut case. But DI Poole knows the facts just don’t add up, and there is more to the mystery than meets the eye. . . .
The first installment of the Death in Paradise Mysteries, perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and Caroline Graham.

A brilliant murder mystery
The author Robert Thorogood is the creator of the murder mystery TV series Death In Paradise featuring Detective Inspector Richard Poole on the island of Saint-Marie. The author now puts his characters in a book for the first time. This is a new story and has not been shown as a TV episode.Aslan Kennedy along with his wife run a spiritual retreat. Every morning he holds a meditation (called sunrise healing) with a number of selected guests in a room situated in the middle of a large lawn and made of paper and wood. After the room is locked from inside, the guests drink tea and lie down wearing eye-masks to cover the eyes and wireless headphones to listen to soothing sounds. One day, when there are 5 guests, the tea happens to be drugged and when the guests wake up they find Julia, one of the group, standing over Aslan with a bloody knife and Aslan lying dead with multiple stab wounds. Julia confesses to the crime.Detective Inspector Richard Poole has doubts about the confession. The nature of the wounds shows that the stabbings have been done with the right hand, whereas Julia is the only left-hand person in the group. Also, since the crime was obviously pre-meditated, why was Julia found holding a knife? And why should anyone kill Aslan in that place and on that occasion since it would be obvious that one of the 5 guests is involved in the murder. There are several twists and turns and several red herrings. Suspicion falls on each guest turn by turn. Finally, there is an ingenious solution and all the perplexities of the case are satisfactorily answered. This is a brilliant murder mystery. Suspenseful and a page-turner. It is also fairly well clued. In addition, it is quite humorous with Richard Poole being the most amusing character. For example, while on work he always wears a woollen suit with jacket despite the sweltering heat, because detective inspectors are supposed to be dressed like that !The book is highly recommended and I have no hesitation in rating it 5 star.

Into the mind of DI Poole
If you are a fan of Death in Paradise you will definitely enjoy this novel. A completely new mystery set during the time of DI Poole. I particularly liked how the author took you into the thoughts of Poole and Camille. Fun, breezy read.

Fairly Entertaining BUT….
I’m a fan of the first two seasons of Death in Paradise. I love the characters and I love the actors who played them, it was their performance that got me hooked on this British TV series. And I still think DI Poole is central and essential to what the original Death in Paradise TV series is all about. So when series creator, Robert Thorogood came out with the novelization, I was curious to see what he’d come up with plus I miss seeing DI Poole in Saint-Marie.Anyway, I enjoyed reading this novel to a certain extent. It’s light reading and Thorogood didn’t stray far away from the whodunnit formula and the TV format. But there are times that he seemed to be scriptwriting instead of novel writing. He has a tendency to ‘tell’ the story, perhaps because things are already established in the series and he’s assuming readers already know what he was talking about. But he managed to entertain and keep me reading. I particularly liked the part with DI Poole and Harry the lizard. There are also parts where he revealed the psyche behind DI Poole, which to me is very interesting as a Death in Paradise fan. Maybe that’s his attempt at further character development for DI Poole because he and the BBC did away with him entirely in the TV series (sad that happened but that’s television business for you). Anyway, I find the use of the whiteboard distracting though and I agree with some reviewers that some information became overly redundant. I particularly take issue on the denouement of the case – goodness, almost two chapters of DI Poole’s monologue reveal??? While it’s dynamic to see on TV, it’s VERY VERY TEDIOUS when you’re reading it on a page or a Kindle. I ended up having to skim through it. There’s must be a better way to write and SHOW us these things without boring us to tears. I mean Agatha Christie was able to do it. Or even the novelization of Murder, She Wrote did a good job of it. Anyway, I hope in the next novel, Thorogood will know and write better. *fingers crossed*

A good English mystery
Good story. Interesting g characters no vulgar places. Slow at times but kept my interest. I liked the lead detective. He is very smart but has some. quirks.

I had so much fun reading this, I loved watching DIP and it was so easy imagining the characters, their voices and how they behaved. As for a standalone story, if you havenât watched the TV series, itâs a fun and easy read.

What makes this story intriguing is not just the absorbing mystery, but also the fascinating character of its protagonist, DI Poole. I truly empathise with the idea of choosing to rewire your lamp over a late night mixer.
