An inspiring and revealing essay about motherhood, self-acceptance, and overcoming the fears that hold you back by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Open Book.

“If I want to lead myself into something greater than yesterday, I have to surrender the things that scare me and hold me back.”

Jessica Simpson collected so much emotional baggage over the course of her life that she began to feel like she couldn’t carry anything else. She knew she needed to confront her fears. She made a to-do list for the life she wanted. No more struggling to please everyone else. No more dulling the pain. No more avoiding the scary stuff. From now on, she’ll focus only on the expectations she has for herself. With her inviting warmth and trademark intimacy, Jessica reflects on the example of her daughters and son, reclaiming her power and taking the lead in her own life.

    Surprisingly inspiring….
All I know of this incredible human, Jessica Simpson is from seeing her as my teenaged daughter’s pop star fave, and then her acting chops on a “That 70’s show” rerun recently. I am aware of her shoe line from my own “fave” shoe store ads. I am from North Louisiana and totally get her “bible thumping” quotes, as we have more churches than home here. But I must say, as many “star memoirs” as I find myself reading these days for entertainment, Ms. Simpson’s are the first to resonate with me. Human to human, and it’s so refreshing. Her literary works are like having a heart to heart with your best bud, who has “been there and done that.” And wants you to be the very best and happiest you can in this life. Kudos!

A Glimpse in the Looking Glass
Beautifully written, woven into a tale of vulnerability, honesty, strength and grace. Simpson details about perspective and taking ownership of one’s life in a relatable way. She provides her the readers the impetus to face the challenges like has bestowed on us in a courageous way. She has the wisdom to remind her readers they hold the power within themselves. She shares her experiences and challenges in such a poignant way. Simpson found a way to turn life’s tragedies into something very prolific and powerful.

Great insight and outlook for life
The only reason it’s not five stars is because I felt although wrapped up neatly I wanted more. This was well written and the insight could definitely be a book.

    read her book, too
God works all things together for good – I know this truth to be self evident. And yet, sometimes, even when we know this, it still does not always seem to comport with every-day existence. *Working through trauma and facing ourselves is some of the most important work we can do as individuals. *It can free you. We have all been dealt different hands and have made varying choices in this life, but this is one universal truth Jessica exemplifies beautifully.

    Encouraging letting go of fears
Good pep talk about letting go of our fears that are holding us back. I liked how she put her own fears into the essay. She was someone facing a long standing fear. She is both encouraging and vulnerable with what she writes. I wish she had been more in depth on some parts.

    Great Essay
I have always been a fan of Jessica Simpson. She’s very down to earth and real!!! My first born child/daughter was born on the exact day and year as Jessica and I thought that was very ironic. My daughter and I love her music, her reality show she had with Nick and her books. This essay just confirmed how down to earth and honest Jessica is and how she I stills that in her gorgeous children. I loved it!!!!

    I swear I wasn’t going to do this again…
After the last Jessica Simpson read I swore I would never torment myself with her essays again. But this one was actually better than I expected I’d say it was a 3.8 so I rounded up to a 4

I don’t know what made me click on this when it popped up on my Kindle front page. Mostly, I think, I was curious to know if it was the girl I once watched on a very early reality show when she had just got married? I still don’t really know if it was the same girl. It’s very short, just 22 pages long, but it’s deep and it’s meaningful and it’s thought provoking and it’s quite relevant to me right now. Not because I’m a young mother like her (and she sounds like an awesome mother by the way) but because I’m contemplating change at the moment, maybe a lot of us are after this awful pandemic, where we’ve had time to look inwards and seen something that we’d like to change. The message that this essay gives is summed up in Jessica’s daughter’s words, ‘You can do it’ and I for one feel inspired by reading it. Well done Jessica and well done to her little daughters (and no doubt her son) who already know, “they can do it!”

I underlined so many passages. I might as well have hit “select all”. Jessica is boundless in love, hope and being a 5 star mum. What a beautiful read.

I’m sure for many readers coming to this essay it is pared back enough to let the basic premise rise to the top. Its message is broad enough and simple enough to be a prompt to act now.
