International bestselling author Jeffery Deaver explores the borderline between lies and loyalty in a story of a brotherhood on the brink.
In the wake of a disastrous firefight with a Mexican cartel, two El Paso police officers find themselves in a military hospital facing a debriefing about what went wrong. As their accounts unfold, Tony, a by-the-book cop, begins to believe that hotheaded Matt might have divided loyalties. Could he have intentionally led the team into a trap that saw the death of a beloved senior officer? Or is the truth even more terrifying than Tony dares to imagine?

Great Twists and Surprising Finish
This was my first Jeffery Deaver novella, and it was a totally “blind” purchase when it was released. Not knowing what to expect and always distrustful of most short novella stories, I took a gamble just to explore. Overall, I was not disappointed with the fast, action read. The story focuses on two brothers, both detectives for the El Paso Police Department working to take down part of a Mexican drug cartel. Things go fast fast, starting the short but enjoyable adventure. Other that the rough language (military cursing), the rest of the storytelling caught my interest quickly. This short work of fiction has about 40 pages in 13 fast-paced chapters, making it a quick and interesting read. The innovative plotline was hard to predict, making it a solid one-time read. A great diversion when you don’t have much time. The Audible narration added effective pacing and dialogue drama, increasing the value of the reading experience.Even though the storyline was focused and interesting, it’s still a toss up for me on whether I’ll read more by the author, especially in this format.

Great Twists
Great story with the usual side story that gives the reader another twist to ponder. Deaver keeps you guessing to the end.

Page turner for sure.
Basically a good read story. No frills but no holes either. Characters fully defined and plot unfolding just right. Page turner for sure.

A drug drop in Mexico has become a shoot out
When Tony, a member of the El Paso Police Department, turns up to assist. One of his fellow officers, Matt, is holed up in an empty building trying to plant bugging equipment in the building. Tony manages to reach the building before grenades are launched into the building, and then he wakes up in a military hospital with only minor injuries and Matt in the next bed. Soon FBI agents arrive to interview them suspecting the entire operation was a set up.

You Can’t Trust Family
The Debriefing deals with one brother who cannot trust the other brother. The story is an extremely quick one, and the characters felt lile paper cut out characters. I dont know if rhese chararcters were in previous stories so the reader knows about them already, but reading this story I had no interest in either charcter. The character’s dialogue is straight from an 80’s action movie. You can even think of one brother as Arnold Schwarznegger and the other brother as Sylvester Stallone. The story is basically one big shootout. Not much in the way of substance in this one. It is an extremely quick read, and I guess this is what Jeffrey Deaver is doing now. I have read Deaver books in the past, and I remember there always being rich charcters and good plot lines. This is not what I remember from him at all. It is like he had to write a story in an hour and this is the result. The story is somewhat entertaining in the same way an action movie with no story is, which is why I gave it a 2 star rating as opposed to a 1 star rating. It is also over before you know it like ripping a band aid off. This is a book for those who have very limited time on their hands and like action movies with no story line whatsoever. Deaver references the Netflix show Narcos in this story, and that is a much better story line dealing with cartel members than this story. Waste of a half an hour.

Brutal
Disclosure: books about drug cartelsâ wars are not my usual cup of tea because they tend to describe violence in a way that I find too graphic for a fiction. But since the story was written by accomplished and well-read writer and was short and free I decided to give it a try.The narrative starts with a scene of brutal fight between cartel members and police officers with equally brutal language. Then plot moves back and forth in time revealing more information about people on both sides of the law. This includes two brothers, both law enforcement officers. There is a smart twist to the story, but the best part and the reason for three stars, and not only two, is these brothersâ relationship. The biggest downside for me was the graphic description of the planned torture. Maybe I should try the longer book by this author; there must be a reason why he is so popular.

The story was good and fast moving with convincing twists and turns. I was disappointed that the story didn’t continue for longer. I was really bought into the story of two brothers. Fascinating!

lots of twists in the story line

A somewhat different setting, Mexican badlands, cartels, and dysfunctional brothers, all blend for a very enjoyable double play with deadly consequences for the losers. It’s not typical Deaver, but perhaps that’s why it works well. And in short form, it’s a quick snack. Very good!

Very short, abrupt ending. Not the usual Reaver quality I’ve come to expect.I’m a big fan of his books, particularly the Lincoln Rhyme series, but was disappointed by this story.
